5at 4.083 gears..

I have been searching the past hour on trying to get info as I want to do this next to my coupe.
My car is an 06 5at that came with the sport package which I believe comes with an oem lsd?

With that said, I recall I can(?) run 4.083 gears on my coupe correct but what else is needed and where to purchase? I tried looking up z1 but their site confused me so if anyone can help me clarify exactly what I'll need to get this done, that would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if I may have missed a thread that explains this but I tried my best.

(itching to see how this gearing with my vb upgrade will help with the launch)

Thank you in advance.

You're going to need a 6MT pumpkin from another G35 or 350Z so the 4.083 ring and pinion fits. Also probably a bearing rebuild kit just for precaution.

That's way too much gear for a VQ35DE unless you've got cams and a heavy breathing intake manifold. You need to be making power into the 7200+rpm range to take advantage of that much torque multiplication. You'll be slower with the 4.08 gears. The max you want to go is the 3.69. If you want more gearing for the strip, simply run shorter drag radials or slicks.

I have the 3.54 gear and a set of 225/50R15 BFG DRs. The tires are 3" shorter, overall, than OEM. That gives my car an effective rear ratio of 3.75. I have yet to try the setup at the strip yet. I may be quicker or I may be slower. It's hard to say.

Great info DaveB as always, thank you.
What would be needed with the 3.69 and/or the 3.54 gears?

You can just swap pumpkins with a 6MT G35 or 350Z for the 3.54 gear ratio, and for the 3.69's you can swap with a G37.

I believe you will need new flanges (I think that's what they are called) for the G37 pumpkin to swap right in though. Still a bolt-on modification from what I hear though, so don't get discouraged.

Yes, 3.9's and 4.0 is waaaaay too much for 5AT..

I've ran 3.9's 3.5's, and stock 3.3. My favorite setup was the 3.5 best all around.. 3.9 was insane 0-60.. 3.3 just sucked (were best from around a 30 roll race/ 50 roll race.

I looked and looked and looked forever for 3.7 gears but they were too hard to find or running me $1000+. I did not want to pay that much for 3.7 gears which weren't even straight bolt on so I stuck with 3.5's.

I got my 3.7 pumpkin w/VLSD off of an 09 G37 6MT sport coupe. 100% direct swap, it already comes with the flange and shorter shaft that we use.

That's good info man. Didn't know it was a direct swap, there you go, don't even have to get new flanges!

Silencer: thanks for chiming in. I remember you also paired up your gears with the vb upgrade just as I did, I just want to do gears now. How is your accel and off the line improvement with both your vb and gears paired together vs. stock?

Thank you in advance.

So I'm a tad confused, our cars coming with 3.5 stock?
That 3.7 sounds tempting. And if I can just get the parts locally from dealer or whatever, what exactly would I ask for that I need for this gear stuff to work?

Thank you.

No problem. I think the combination of the shorter gears and vb upgrade is awesome, you can definitely feel the quicker acceleration throughout the gears.

Correct, both our car's came with the 3.5 w/lsd since we both have the sport package. You can try calling dealerships and asking them if they have any pumpkins left over. I bought mine off of eBay for $400 shipped (it's heavy as hell), it had 18k miles on it. You can also call your local junkyards, or try car-parts.com. The pumpkin is also called the "rear carrier assembly".

Silencer: thank you yet again!
So all I need is the 3.7 "rear carrier assembly" and that's all I'll need for the gear swap?

If you get a pumpkin off of the same model I did, then yes, it'll be a direct swap. You'll just need some gear oil. There are a couple other models that require no modifications also, there's a list of them somewhere in that long DIY 3.7 FD swap thread. There's a lot of good info in that thread, so I'd recommend reading through it before buying anything.

Edit: here's the thread.

I think I'll go with the 3.7 gear route. I don't want the swap to be too minimal of a change, and yet not too aggressive where it actually ends up the gearing worse.

Thank you again, Silencer- I hope the 3.7 route I (potentially) take will be worth it!
I owe you a beer if you're in Chicago- you've been a wealth of information.
