6MT 1st gear sounds

I recently took purchase of an 05 6mt sedan and noticed very quickly a slight pulsing feeling in the clutch as I released it into first gear. Thought I just wasn't doing it right but after a week of trying it still has the same pulsing. I noticed today with the windows down I can hear a pulsing sound as well. Is this normal? Does the 6mt have a special clutch that could cause this? Please let me know. It is smooth in all the other gears and goes away as soon as the clutch is fully released in first. Help!

don't know about the '05 but that's the way the '04 is. i practiced a bunch starting out from a stop without using the gas to get the "feel" of this clutch system and it helped me to achieve smoother normal starts. the clutch wear-in helped a lot too. it gets easier with age and practice.

side benefit is the wife doesn't like to drive it because of the stop-1st and 1st-2nd shift, so it's mine.

It took a little time for me to get used to the clutch. The 1st-2nd shift was the most difficult and I felt the same pulsing through my foot as you described. Over time, as the clutch breaks in, the shifting gets easier, the pulsing is still there though. One thing about the G, more so than all the other MTs I've driven, is that I receive a lot of feed back about the car from the pedals. Its what makes the G awesome!!

Have you done a clutch adjustment yet? If not I would definitely recommend it, my clutch now has a nice short travel and makes shifting so much smoother. I don't even think I need to go with a short throw shifter like I was planning, it made that much difference.

Same thing in my 05 6MT. I took it to the dealer and they called Infiniti's TechLine. Techlines suggestion was to compare it to another 05 6MT and see if they both did the same thing. Unfortunately the dealer is not expecting another 6MT for a while so I'll have to wait and see. The service department spent a day checking things out and could find nothing wrong. I also read a few threads a couple of weeks ago with others experiencing similar issues including a mild clattering sound at stop-1 and 1-2. Sounded like valves but its not. It seems the clattering and pulsing are common.

Common problem, have it on my '05 6MT too, engaging 1st gear gives a shudder but slowly going away after 1000 miles. It was very bad at first but as the clutch breaks in it goes away gradually.

This has come up regarding the 6mt's many times on different sites. It is a common problem, I call it a problem and not normal occurence because I don't believe such an exspensive car should shift less smooth than my 13 year old vw. I have had the same condition for almost a year now, albeit I only have 5400k on her now but its still there nonetheless. You can try and get your dealer to do something about it but most people who try get nowhere except a comment that its normal and they all do that. There are many threads on this site and others if you want some history of success of appoaching the dealer with this particular problem. The worst part is some 6mt's have it and some don't. Good luck.

Thumbs up Clutch

Thanks for all the feedback. It sound like it's common. I will probably go to the dealer to see if they can adjust it. I'll let you know what happens.

I brought mine into two different dealers. One would not really do anything claiming it was normal. Another kept it for a few days though the end result was I still had the noise. I currently have 8k miles. Seems like it is not going away. I test drove a few and I noticed some did not make the noise.

I guess that I can welcome myself to the club-I noticed the pulsing on the stop-1st right away and after 8 or 9 times from stop, I figured it wasn't me. It is a little annoying. No other car I've owned has done that and the only cars I know of that makes that annoyance are old Subaru's. I just got my 05 6MT 2 weekends ago and that plus my fuel guage issue seem to be it (filled up at 1/16th of a tank and only could sqeeze in 15.454 gal on a 20 gal tank...I see that that is a common problem too) Other than that, I love it so far.

Clutch

I have been able to improve the sound but only at the expense of slow starts. I think I remember reading something about the 05 MT was a "dual Mass" flywheel. I can guess that this is a two faced flywheel?? Somebody help me out. I wonder if that is what causes the rough start. More mass for strong launches? Nismo7

Ah, Nismo7, we meet again. Sounds like alot of people have this issue. I'm going to point out this "problem" to the dealer when I take mine in tomorrow for some moulding issues. It is less a shuttering to me (there is no clutch slippage), and more like a clattering, like a gear with a bad tooth. And it is audible, just like yours. On quick take offs and when I back up an incline(my driveway), I feel a knocking in the pedal and hear a slight "clack, clack, clack..." when there is pressure on the transmission but the clutch is not fully engaged.
I expected that when I bought an Infiniti, I would get a silky smooth clutch as part of the deal. It does not seem that way. My base 1990 Ford Ranger that cost 1/4 of the price of my G had a smoother clutch than this! I'm hoping that the dealer takes my dissatisfaction seriously and really looks at the problem. But with my experience with car dealers over the years, I'm fully expecting the old "That's normal. They all do that" answer. And I suppose that if the car performs like it should, albeit "clattering," there's not much I can do but wait for the problem to manifest itself as something alot more serious.

I'll post what the dealer tells me tomorrow.

As I expected I was told that the noise was normal and that they test drove the other 6MT on the lot and it sounded/felt the same. I do have documentation that this was their diagnosis. I'm just going to live with it for now. It seems to be getting better with more miles anyway.

I had same problem on my 04, but hit 29k miles right now and the noise fade away. One time got asked by two guys at a gas station with the same problem, they drove mine and ofcourse mine fade away a little so I think its a normal problem and have no problem with that now! Goodluck buddy!
