Normal Temps for Trans in 85+ degrees?
Normal Temps for Trans in 85+ degrees?
Hope everyone is safe and healthy. So I recently installed a JDM trans in my auto g35 sedan. I top it off on the cold line and also on the hot line on the dip stick. Afterwards, I been keeping an eye on my tran temps in these 85-92 degree weather lately, using the Nissan Data Scan software. I am looking at the ATF sensor 2, which I believe is in the pan.
In stop & go traffic, temps reach 200-210 degrees. Once I reach those temps and hop on the freeway, temps go down to 194-199 degrees. Is that normal?
anyone remembers what temps your normally see in summer?
Thanks!

I check my trans fluid level hot with the engine running in park on level ground. Mine takes about 4qts per drain/fill.
I have datascan 2 as well, and I noticed mine running around 190* in stop and go traffic. That was when the weather was a bit colder, so now I'd imagine mine running about the same.
My plan is to add a Derale dual cooler so I can have both a P/S and ATF cooler in the near future, since my car has no P/S cooler. I may add a small fan + a thermostatic switch if I have enough room.
I spoke with my local Aamco transmission shop owner, and his recommendation for all the Titans and Z/G owners with these Jatco 5AT's was to run only a front mounted external trans cooler, and bypass the radiator trans cooler all together. He claimed that more than half the 5AT's he'd rebuilt were because that rad trans cooler failed - flooding the trans with coolant, and frying the TCM (04.5+newer have the TCM in the transmission w/ valve body.)
I replaced my radiator a few months ago out of precaution, but I am still debating on whether I want to run only a front external cooler or run coolers in series like most recommend.

Thanks, I guess the temps are normal. lately I put the car in "park" when I reach a red light to let it cool down a bit. I am also looking at front trans cooler in series too. I am thinking about experimenting with a Nissan Rogue trans cooler or the Nissan Altima cooler.

You mean this one? Is that a small thermostat built into it?
Yup, sometimes I shift into Neutral if I know the stoplight is going to be long.

This is the cooler I'm going to run. I'm mounting it on the passenger side, fittings aimed downward. Problem I ran into is that the cooler is really long, so I had to get four 90* -8an fittings along with two 3/8 barb (p/s line) and two 5/16 barb adapters (atf line).

Yup, that is it but not that price. Im just going with a TYC brand. Already picked up the support brackets & tubes from the junkyard. I am not really sure what the valve is. I am guessing a pressure valve.
One other thing, I'd recommend you put a Magnefine in-line filter in your trans lines. The filter inside the trans is literally a mesh screen, kinda weak sauce honestly. The Magnefine filters have a small filter and a magnet to trap any particulates or metal.
That is an awesome filter. Finished up the trans cooler. My temps are now under 194 when driving on the highway in this summer weather. It's sometimes lower than the coolant temp. Trans temp now around 165-180 but of course when I reach a red light, temps climb back up.
I bet the derale will be even better.

Trans temp on nearly every vehicle will be the same as your engine thermostat under normal usage after it's fully up to temp. The two components being bolted together act as a heatsink towards one another to a large degree. What you want to do is keep your tranny fluid temp under about 220F during hard usage, if it's climbing high at idle then something isn't functioning properly.
What exactly are you using to measure trans fluid temp? OBD2 data or an inline aftermarket sensor?

I am now running a stacked plate cooler for the trans. Its a Trucool 'B7B'. The biggest difference is with the Derale, the temps would rise and hang at the peak temp for quite a while, and slowly cool down. With the trucool temps drop down to 180-190* within 10 minutes of driving on the freeway or lower load (converter locking up). Overall the highest temps I've seen running her hard was: over 230* stock, ~215* with the Derale, and today running the TruCool the highest I got was 205*
