5AT transmission cooler?

Hi,

i've just joined having purchased a JDM 2003 V35 350GT (i'm in Australia)

it has 25,000kms on it (10,000miles roughly) and at this point i would like to get a full transmission flush with some good fluid as it's probably never been done since new

on my last car, an R32 GTSt skyline (automatic), i had a transmission cooler on it and it never missed a beat even with twice the power and torque than stock running through it

so i was thinking of putting a transmssion cooler on my V35 and wanted to see if anyone over in the states has done this?

i know its not a mod where you feel any diference at all, but i can personally attest to the longevity that it provides to the gearbox..

any opinions/advice?

cheers,
Warren

What an accurate digital ATF temp sensor with a variable speed fan controller is used for ---------to maintain ATF at 174F.

The only thing i would use on the gearbox is Nissans matic J transmission fluid. Don't use anything else or you will have problems. I havn't heard much about the tranny cooler (only a couple people have them), but i would do it if i were you.

To answer you primary question - yes. Many have installed aftermarket ATF coolers... is there a drawback? - for most no.

I had a spook related to ancillary issues that I can’t directly attribute to the installation of the ATF cooler.

Many however have reported much better life with the addition of cooler... if you are running stock; the internal ATF cooler is more the sufficient. If you are boosted or heavily modified an external cooler is a good idea.

In most cases, adding one won’t hurt any - it's cheap and if done properly and maintained, it will be nothing more than added insurance for your tranny.

With the current price of Nissan Synethic ATF, just a 10% longer drain interval can pay for a reasonable external cooler fast............all depends on whether you want 100k, 150k or 200k transmission life.

what problems?

i have been running motul fluid in my R32 nissan gearbox without problems, i don't see their being an issue with the V35 gearbox... as long as its reasonable fliud

i'm pretty sure that i will be going with the cooler.. i'm looking at the "davies craig" cooler which is reasonably priced over the counter here in australia

anyone else with real world experience of trans coolers on the G35/V35?

cheers for the responses so far..

Um, yeah. Don't use anything BUT "J". I was at the dealership, and the guy next to me was told he needed a new tranny. He explained he was running a "superior" fluid. They replied that was the cause, and he was quite upset.

I don't know what he was running, but I'd listen to the BIG STICKER under the hood that says "ONLY RUN 'J' FLUID"... and the manual...

I'd research it a little more before experimenting!

Yes, running too cool can cause problems. Interesting, though, that the 5AT transmission has an internal temperature sensor and valve that control flow to the cooler. IOW, you can put a mega-cooler on there and never over-cool the fluid.

Why do you keep bumping ancient threads. But yes, you can always add more cooling heat sinks. The G cools the trans fluid with radiator coolant though, just an FYI, if you go racing it may be smart to bypass the radiator all together Incase of an internal failure mixing coolant and trans fluid.

I believe Matic J is discontinued in the U.S. to my knowledge. Matic S is the current replacement
I have had 2 v35's, an 04 I bought last month with 160k, and an 05 I sold with over 250k on it. I ran Valvoline ATF in my 05 for about 5k before the next drain/refill. The next service the fluid came out with a ton of clutch material in it. It could have been the trans letting go, but needless it wasn't puking clutches before hand..... Needless, I am sticking strictly to Matic S from here out on my 04.

Just noticed this was a thread revival... whoops
