06 Transmission Speed Sensor location
06 Transmission Speed Sensor location
I recently got a great deal on an 06 with 115k miles. It has the slip light and VCD off light on. After some research and pulling codes it seems the transmission speed sensor is bad. I cannot seem to find it to remove it. Can anyone help me find the sensor or give any pointers for replacing it?
Code is P0720

Turbine revolution sensor is inside the tailshaft housing of the 5AT.
-Disconnect battery
-Drain transmission fluid
-Remove exhaust y-pipe
-Remove driveshaft
-Remove shift linkage
-Remove fluid pan
-Support transmission with a jack, remove engine mount and crossmember
-Remove tailshaft extension bolts and remove tailshaft extension
-Turbine revolution sensor is now accessible, it plugs into the front harness on the valve body/TCM, pay attention to how the wire is routed through all those little metal "fingers" that holds it into the proper place.
Unbolt, get a new one, installation is in reverse.
Torque specs for everything are listed in the FSM, section AT - Automatic Transmission starting on page AT - 246
That's why you got a great deal on it
It's about a 10 hour job.

Thanks a lot for a good jumping off point. I printed all the relevant FSM pages and I should be all set now.
Yeah it's actually a really EASY fix it's just super time consuming.
Depending on the mileage you should probably plan on replacing that transmission output shaft seal while you have the tailshaft off. Press on it around the entire diameter with your finger and if the rubber isn't pliable just install a new one.
EDIT: the seal at the end where the propeller shaft goes in.
Use Matic J or Matic S transmission fluid.
