"Learning Transmission" update from Infiniti

"Learning Transmission" update from Infiniti

A while ago I asked about this feature and nobody had any information. There was another post recently about this as well, so this time I emailed Infiniti Customer Services. It took a couple weeks for them to get back with me. It looks like Infiniti didn't have the answer, so they went directly to Nissan. Here's the reply: (and no Dear John jokes!!!)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear John,

Thank you for contacting Nissan North America, Inc. and allowing us the
opportunity to be of assistance.

Unfortunately, Nissan Consumer Affairs does not have access to information
regarding the learning algorithm feature on the transmission of the G35
sedan.

For information regarding this issue, please contact:

Nissan Technical Center North America
39001 Sunset Drive
P.O. Box 9200
Farmington Hills, MI 48333-9200
Phone: 248/488-4123
Fax: 248/488-3901

If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail
us.

Sincerely,

James
National Consumer Affairs

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like we'll be waiting some more...but I'll keep looking into it.

Regards,

JC

Re: "Learning Transmission" update from Infiniti

My transmission has twice failed to kick-down to a lower gear when trying to pass in traffic at a speed under 35-40mph. Hope it "learns" real soon... before I end up in an accident.

The service manager says he's never heard of this problem. I'm not surprised!

Re: "Learning Transmission" update from Infiniti

This could be fixed with some basic ECU reprogramming. Perhaps a custom-burned chip to be piggybacked (www.superchips.com) would help this?

"Dear John" ha ha ha, Thanks for finding the leed in Michigan --- maybe they can shed some light on this important subject. We're all waiting with baited breath and 'shifty' transmissions.. If you need someone to drop them a line let me know , I'd bet glad to do that. (Too bad no email.)

Re: "Learning Transmission" update from Infiniti

Dave O, Kind of a dumb question but are you sure you had the tranny in 'D' (not manumatic)? mine didn't kick down one day and then I realized I had the tranny in Manual mode.
If there is something wrong then try disconnection the battery for 1/2 hr. If I'm not mistaken the tech I talked to said it takes a little while to 'take'. Apparently this resets the ECU and the relearning process starts all over again. Hope this helps. Gsedanman- Garnet Fire Sedan ('till Jan)

Re: "Learning Transmission" update from Infiniti

I forgot to mention that both times the transmission was in Drive. I rarely use manual due to the extremely slow response time. I've tried manual several times but don't have the timimg down for full throttle shifts. Last time I tried a first to second manual shift at 6000rpm I still hit the rev limiter.

Re: "Learning Transmission" update from Infiniti

DaveO: If I were you I'd try disconnecting the battery like overnight. Can't remember if the tech said 1/2 hr or 1/2 day. I was surprised when I heard tho. It isn't just disconnect and reconnect. Check with your people for an opinion. Have no idea if it'll make any diff. to the prob but worth a try . It'll mean resetting radio presets and maybe the seats. Constjs should have some kind of answer soon from a Technical source in Michigan.
Whichever way you go tho, let us know what happens. It's a problem with very few answers right now. Good luck

Re: "Learning Transmission" update from Infiniti

There is a backup memory, hence the long time of battery terminal disconnection. If you can just find the corresponding fuses in the fuse box and pull them, there'd be no need to wait. Check the fuse box diagram and find anything with ECU and yank it.

Re: "Learning Transmission" update from Infiniti

On the topic of the blinding speed of the manu-matic shifts. Mine seems to do the 1st to 2nd shift best if I initiate the change at 4500. In almost every case the actual shift takes place at 6500-6600.

hmm am i understanding properly that initiating at 4500 induces an actual shift 2k rpm later? wow.. isnt that an abnormally large latency?

I in no way want to put down automatics, because I was very, very close to buying an automatic G35 coupe, and the CTS I just bought for my wife is an auto.

Nonetheless, I now am very happy that I took my eldest son with me to order my G35 coupe in 2003. At that time the only two G35 coupes on the lot were already spoken for and there was a 3 month backlog, so I was able to order exactly what I wanted. When I was placing the order I told the salesman that I wanted an automatic (so I could drink my coffee on the way to work). My son, who was 17 at the time, just about b*tch slapped me and said "are you crazy", you need a manual shift in that car. I followed his advise and got the 6MT. I have never regreted it and I am very glad I took him with me to place the order.

Now, if I could only get him to follow my advice and get is *ss straightened out and back into college...., or at least a career he can stick with and make a living.

I apologize if this seems off topic, but I guess I'm turning into a reminiscing old fart.
