Your tach will stay correct, it's just that you are going to drive at higher rpms for the same speed as you were before.

Okay I'm sold but... Does anyone have realistic 0-60 or 1/4 mile times after the change? I would love to hear any feedback from someone who has this info. I know it's all realitive to the cars other mods, but an example of performance would be great. Overall it sounds lake an excellent mod for the money.

I dont get why anyone would want this mod. The G35 is quite short geared to begin with. If you want more power at freeway speeds just drive in 5th gear. I believe fifth gear will handle all speeds up to the electronic limit so you wil never need to switch.

Even if you go into 6th you still have enough power. Sixth gear at 80 mph is 3k rpm. That will give you enough power for highway passing.

Basicaly anything this mod will give you, you can achieve by switching to lower gear in the original gear box. So the only advantage this mod really gives is a shorter first gear. Well guess what even in the original first gear you can spin the wheels if you slam the gas. Shortening the first gear will of course increase this problem. I dont see why one needs a shorter first gear at all.

Anyways I dont see the point.

If I had my way gears 1-5 would remain the same and sixth gear should be changed to be much taller for better fuel efficiency at highway cruising. Since you dont really need 6th gear when racing might as well make it a "fuel efficiency gear".

This is more for track use than anything. On the street it isn't too practical because of the gas issue. But the purpose is to improve your acceleration. For example, you come into a corner on a track at 45mph, with the new gearing, when you put the gas down and start accelerating hard out of your turn you will pull harder than you would at 45 with the stock gearing. Downshifting to first would not help the situation at this point because, obviously, you would be way over the redline.

As Pwoz stated, it's great for the track as well as increasing acceleration. It's not about more power at freeway speeds. It's simply a way to use the power differently. As with any other mod people have different reasons for doing them.

The DRs are 23.9" in height or about 2.3" shorter than the stock 215/55R17s. These shorter tires effectively changed my gearing by about 10% or what would be the equalivalent of a 3.6 gear. The DRs did the following things:

1) Offered better seat of the pants acceleration thru gear 1, 2, and 3.

2) Forced a 4th gear shift ~150 short of the finish line. This caused my car ETs and MPHs to suffer. With the OEM 17s, the car finished in 3rd. I was about .05 and 1.5mph SLOWER with the DRs.

3) The speedometer was wildly off. The 17s, my speedo said 100mph just as I passed the finish line. With the 15s, it said ~110mph.

What you have just written is NOT in conflict with what he said. The speed readings are taken with the drive flanges. that means that the speed will not change as he has not changed the rolling circumference of the tires. If the speed sensor is taken from the rotation of the tires, rather than the transmission output shaft, nothing will change. If you change the tire size, yes, it will change.

This is because you changed the tires diameter......wheel speeds are taken at the drive flange.
This is more of a road course modification than a drag racing mod.

I personally would think this mod will make any drag racer happy at the track. But this would only hinder highway driving, especially mph (look at the gas prices these days!).. It might have a slight chance of wearing down your engine a bit faster since it's having the engine rev a bit faster.. but I don't think it's that much a difference.

like someone said above, rim/tire package that results in smaller diameter than oem basically accomplishes this.......when i had a 3% smaller than oem diameter setup on my 2000 maxima 5 speed, the gears were really, really short and the tach would be about 200rpm higher on 5th gear at 60mph vs the oem tire/wheel combo....

Don't forget to mention, it will increase your mileage on the odo by that too.
