Auto shudder on 2-3 shifts.

Hello to all, I'm new on this forum. Let me preface this by saying, that I have done a search on this. My wife has an 03 G35 sedan. I noticed a shudder on the 2-3 upshift. The car only has 26,000 garage kept miles on it, and the car is still under waranty. I have noticed this from time to time, when I get a chance to drive the car. We just had the 30,000 mile service done at the dealer, which included a trans fluid change. I told the dealer about the problem, and they reflashed the tranny ECU. The car still has the problem, and when I drove it to dinner last night, it was worse. The search results said that others had the ECU reflashed. That didn't work for me, does anyone know what the problem and solution is? Thanks for your help.

Hmmm, I have an 03.5 and havent had this.

Questions:

1. You are the original owner and have never added ATF fluid? If so, hopefully you only added Nissan Matic-J fluid.

2. The shudder was there before the 30K service? If so, hopefully you told the dealer, it was documented, and you didnt wait too long to bring it in.

3. Was the 30K tranny service just a pan drain/refill, or the full 12 quart fluid transfer/flush? If it was just the drain, you should have them do the whole thing and make sure they do it with the right machine that pumps out all the fluid from the TC as well.

4. Does the shudder happen only when cold? If so, there could be some sticking of valvebody components etc. In this case, you can have them flush it and replace the fluid again under warrantee.

5. If the above doesnt solve it, then they should be willing to tear into the tranny and fix it. A simple reflash wont solve this, its a mechanical interaction.

1. I am the original owner, and have never added fluid.

2. It happened rarely before the service. It sort of felt like the torque mngmt on my GMC truck. Wife never felt it.

3. I don't know what the dealer did. It may have been just a pan drop, and filter change. I'll follow up on this.

4. I have never noticed the shutter when cold, only when it's at normal operating temp.

5. I'm calling the dealer Monday to schedule service.

The shudder is most noticeable when you step down on the throttle, as the car is shifting from 2-3. I have always been amazed at the way the motor and tranny work seamlessly together in this car. The shudder has me worried that expensive repairs may be coming. We love this car, and it always feels good to drive no matter what you just got out of. Thanks for the response, and I hope others will chime in to.

You shouldnt have any costs coming. You have alot of warantee left and you havent done anything to void it. The issue now is to get the dealer to acknowledge that there is a problem and fix it.

Not a good sign. I'll keep you posted on mine. I'm setting up an appointment with the dealer on Monday.

i typically get a jerk when i downshift at a low RPM...so if Im in 3rd around 1-2k rpms and I want to downshift to 2nd in Manumatic mode (to be in the higher rpm powerband) then the car jerks...but I've noticed others have this problem as well....of course sounds like ur problem is when ur shifting UP, not down like in my case.

the only time the car isnt jerky is when im in 3rd around 3-4k rpm and i downshift and hit a higher RPM in 2nd...

Sorry it took so long to post the results. The dealer said they could not duplicate the probelm. The service writer, and manager rode in the car with the computer hooked up, and the shudder never occcured. I'm going to drive the car more than I usually do and see if I can make it shudder on purpose. It usually happens when the car is getting ready to shift into 3rd, and you apply more throttle. Not wide open, but maybe 1/3-1/2 open. If I can make the car do that, I'll go back to the dealer and have them ride with me.

On a side note the dealer said these cars come with 7 year 80,000 mile power train waranty, in addition to the 4 year bumper to bumper waranty. Is this true?

I know exactly what you're talking about, my '05AT has done it since day 1...exactly as you described. There's a shudder on the 2-3 shift in full auto mode when adding throttle right before the shift. The shift also seems to elongate because of the shudder.

It's tricky to reproduce but there's definitly something not right. I've mentioned it to the dealer a couple times just to have it on the record, of course they've never really acknowledged it. If the tranny ever goes out I can say "i told you so". It's a lease and I'll be giving it back before the warranty expires..so i'm covered regardless.

That's just what mine is doing, great description as well. I have 2 service calls on record because of it, so I guess I'll have to wait and see if a more serious problem is brewing.
