Depends on what you consider long term. There are plenty of members on here who have done it with just the grease and it has lasted tens of thousands of miles.

 

The grease is available on eBay (DOW CORNING MOLYKOTE M77 Paste Grease Lubricant Lube 2oz, Silicone Oil Moly MoS2).

 

i considered ordering that molykote on ebay but the more i researched everything i ended up using the waterproof green grease you can get right at autozone or advanced auto which is perfect...no more click

 

I did both my axles between last night and today (lack of time to do both at the same time). I drove it last night after fixing the passenger side and noticed immediately the clicking coming from that side was gone!!! I did the driver side today and no more click!!!
I applied a "generous" amount of grease on each side as i noticed that the axles were completely bear.

It's not a difficult job at all but it is very awkward and the bolts were annoying as hell and some very very tight. I also recommend you spray some PB Blaster on them ahead of time (20min or so) and if you have a buddy that can engage and disengage the E-brake for you regularly, i find it that it helps as you will need to turn the axle/wheels in order to get to the other bolts.

Lastly, removing the axle on the driver side was VERY hard as the exhaust is in the way and the sway bar link also prevents the axle from freely moving out the hub. You are going to need patience and some creativity to get it our of there.

Once again, thanks to the community for finding this problem and a solution for it. I've been coming to these forums for almost 6yrs now and its amazing all the things I now know thanks to people like the OP.

 

Yeah, I know that feel bro. Getting the axle shaft off on the drivers side is a PITA. Its almost worth taking the exhaust off from the axle back.

Definitely second the notion of having a buddy. I had my wife actuate the e-brake while I lied on my back and rotated the opposite wheel with my foot. This made disconnecting the shaft coupling a much easier task.

 

Did mines when I put the coilovers on. 300 miles ago!
