Even though this is a real easy procedure, we decided to take pics and make a How To anyway. This past weekend myself, Vinh (drsifu), and Ty (Sagi) did a fluid change on our manual trannies and rear diffs. Easy, fun, and a little messy. I'd strongly suggest wearing your "work" clothes and lining the areas your going to work with with newspaper to make an easy clean up.

Tools Needed:

Ratchet
10mm Hex Bit Drive
Pan or Container to catch used oil
Gear Oil Pump
Torque Wrench
Car Jack
Jack Stands

Fluids Needed:

3.25 qts of Genuine NISSAN Manual Transmission Fluid
(MTF) HQ Multi 75W-85 or API GL-4, Viscosity
SAE 75W-85 or 75W-90

1.5 qts API GL-5*1, Viscosity SAE 80 W-90

 

1. Get your car up on jackstands or ramps on all 4 corners. Safety first! Here's Ty getting the front end up.

2. Locate the tranny case under the car in between the two cats. Find the filler plug on the passenger side of the tranny case and open it with the ratchet and 10mm hex bit drive. Clean the plug if necessary.

 

3. Find the drain plug on the bottom of the tranny case and open with the ratchet and hex bit drive. Drain oil into pan or container. Do this only after you have allowed enough time for the car and fluid to cool down so you don't burn yourself.

 

4. Clean the drain plug if necessary. You'll probably have a little bit of paste which is normal from metal shavings of wear and tear. After the oil has drained out replace the drain plug and torque down to 25 lbs using the torque wrench.

5. Pump in the new oil through the filler plug using the gear oil pump. You should put in 3.25 quarts or close to that. The amount of oil should just come up to the level of the bottom of the filler plug hole. If you put too much just let the excess drip out until it stops dripping. Once you are finished replace the filler plug and torque down to 25 lbs.

 

6. Repeat the same basic procedure on the rear differential. Undo the filler plug on the passenger side of the diff. Then undo the drain plug on the bottom, back of the diff. Drain oil into an oil pan or container.

 

Notice how the diff drain plug has alot bigger magnet than the tranny drain plug does.

 

7. After all the diff oil has drained replace the drain plug and torque down to 25 ft-lbs. Put in new oil using the gear oil pump. Replace the filler plug and torque down to 25 ft-lbs.


That's generally all there is to it. Pretty easy. After your finished give yourself a pat on the back and go grab a cold one for a job well done.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small"><EM>Edited by RamboRami on 07/14/04 01:10 PM.</EM></FONT></P>

 

Thanks for the DIY instructions. I just changed out my clutch for the Nismo one had the tranny fluid replaced with Synthetic, Now I gotta do the Rear diff. Thanks once again for the Pics.......

Me and another G on this forum (with a GReddy TT) both just finished replacing our stock clutches with the Exedy carbon (+ flywheel) at a shop here in Toronto. I'll post pics soon.
I'm also replacing the tranny fluid with synthetic, probably tomorrow...

You keep saying "torque down to 25 lbs".

Do you mean 25 ft-lbs or 25 in lbs? Force is measured in "lbs" (Force) and torque is measured in "ft-lbs" (distance x Force).

Thanks for making the clarification and the GREAT WRITE UP! I think I'm going to do my own 7500 mile oil, tranny and diffy change thanks to this wonderful write up.
