synthetic vs. non-synthetic

Hi could someone who "really knows" about the difference and has some knowledgable understanding explain the difference between these two oils and also recommand which one to use on a brand new G?

Thanks

I don't know the difference in chemical makeup, but synthetic oils have been shown to lubricate better and last longer. As far as when to use synthetic, some say right away, but I think it's better to run the engine through a couple cycles of regular oil (~8k-10k miles) to let critical parts wear together normally.

I see. What do you exactly mean by letting the parts wear together?

During your break in period, I'd use normal dino oil and short change the intervals.

either your dealer or your owner's manual will have this information.

For break-in, I would use dino oil and change it at 1000 miles. After that, one more period of dino oil for 3000 miles, and switch to synthetic FTW. That is what I would personally do if I were to get a brand new car.

Here's some propaganda from Red Line Oil - Royal Purple has similar data - but the points about synthetic oil in general may be useful to you.

I have heard that it does not matter based on the ways oil is produced nowadays. But regardless I still run synthetic. It makes me feel better.

so how often do you change? can you tell the dealer to put in synthetic or do you have to do it yourself? I also checked the Mobil website, they have 3 different kinds: a 5000, a 7500, and 15000 miles oil. The 15000 sounds ridiculous!! so you just change it and the next time you need to change is a year after!!!????

... I know in the states people change oil quite frequently... like every 3000mi and I don`t know what oil is used , but I always put synthetic oil in every car I have owned and change it every 6-7000mi... and I try not to forget to check the level AND the color of the oil... because sometimes it is usefule to change it when it IS needed and not when it is supposed to be changed... and the same is - if oil level is ok and oil is fresh... there is no need to change it, just because you dealer says it. and you know why they say it
