This is the second greatest mystery in the automotive world.

It sort of defies an answer because it presents an enigma. Filers which filter out everything clog sooner and somewhat unpredictably and then all the oil bypasses the filter and it filters nothing.

The filters which only screen out rocks never clog, but always filter out bugs and pieces of bearings and allow wonderful oil flow.

Probably the best answer is change oil and filter frequently and regularly using a premium oil and don't fret the filter too much.

I am not sure about the Infiniti OEM filters and whether they are higher quality like having metal endcaps. Nissan recently went to cardboard endcaps on filters that I used on my old maxima to save money which is the same construction of the cheap fram and purolator filters. The k&n and mobil are good filters but pricey. I have napa gold filters to be a great balance of quality and price. Their gold filters are made by Wix Filters.

I use a Purolator PureOne (their top tier one, not the 'Performance' or mid-grade one), the slightly longer filter specified for the V8 Nissan/Infiniti's (longer by a bit over 1/2 inch than the OEM replacement one). $5 or so each from NAPA

I don't see the PL14610 listed on Purolator's website. Purolator advised that it's been discontinued and changed to the 612. Something about it being a change in capacity...

Sorry for the confusion. I called Purolator. They told me that the 610 *is* still made, but that the manufacturer (in this case Nissan/Infiniti) had changed the oil filter spec for the G35, and so to be incompliance with the newly called for spec, Purolator is now recommending the 612 as the filter that meets the OEM spec. The rep told me that the 612 is wider in diameter and although not as long, it has more surface area.

Saborz is correct; I use the PL14612.

Here is a screenshot of Purolator's G35 application guide:

hmm... the specs show everything is similar except for the length of the filter, unless there's something in the internals or specific to the filter size that changes it.

http://www.pureoil.com/smartlink/?partnum=PL14610

click specs at the bottom of the page to see.

i just stick w/ the larger filter with hopes more filter area is better.
