I just bought mine Infiniti about 6k miles ago. It is an 06 6MT. I brought it in at the first 3k I drove it. I had a terrible rattling sound as well. when I went to pick it up the mechanic said about a tea cup of oil came out and the lack of oil was what was causing the rattling noise. He said these cars were known to "burn" oil. I said I didn't see any smoke. He said they don't "burn" it like they used to it just gets consumed. He said Check the oil after 1500 miles and see what you have. Just did that today and the oil doesn't even come up to the empty line on the stick. If is ok to add a quart or is it best to get it changed again? I assume the filter should be fine but I am not positive.

If your using synthetic switch to regular. My G wouldnt last 2000 miles on an oil change using synthetic. I switched to regular about 6 months ago and slowly noticed my consumption was decreasing. I just checked my oil yesterday and I have 1/4" left on the dip and I am at 2900 miles!

you need to be checking more often than every 1500 miles if the stick is totally dry...

you are supposed to check your oil ever 2 weeks anyway

Thanks I will certainly do that from now on. However it still doesnt seem right to me that I would be completely out of oil after 1500 miles. Does yours need to have quarts added in between changes?

it isn't right, that is a serious amount of consumption, if you have any powertrain warranty left you need to use it. I don't have mine anymore but the dealer replaced my engine and it was using less oil than yours. if the dipstick is dry after 1500 miles thats like 2-3 quarts you are losing which is really bad

Yeah I figured.... I saw this post on the forum from back in 2008.

https://g35driver.com/forums/tsb-tec...errerid=348614

I am hoping my car will be covered under this and I can have the dealership fix it. I dont have power train warranty left as I bought the car from a used car dealership. So I may be royally screwed.

are you absolutely positive your powertrain warranty is over? I think you have 6 years 70k. If it is I would just fill it with oil and sell it..lol, or better yet trade it in because then its a dealer's problem and not some poor private buyer

I am not 100% sure my warranty is up. I am calling the dealership as soon as I am done at work. I will find out exactly what options I have then. Maybe I will be selling it... You looking to buy lol.

you too, good luck

pretty sure if the original purchase date of your car was after nov 23rd 05 and you are under 70k you still have a little time left on the powertrain warranty. just have to find out when your car was originally purchased

Figured I would post this here as an update on my oil consumption:

About 6 months (and 15k miles) ago I reported that my 2004.5 6MT G Sedan had started consuming oil at the rate of a quart per 400-500 miles. I was really pissed considering I had maintained the heck out of it. I toggled the ideas of:

A) trading it in for a newer car
B) throwing a remanufactured short block in it
C) going with a built NA motor.

Finally, I made the decision that option C would be my best bet and decided to start saving money for the project and I would do it once the motor finally went.

Well, I have since switch to conventional motor oil because there is no point in dumping a perfectly good synthetic oil into a motor that will just blow it out the tail pipes. I will note that this was also a recommendation made by a Nissan Certifed Master Technician. I have been keeping a close eye on my oil level for the last 15k miles and I am happy (and surprised) to report that my oil consumption has slowly decreased. I have gone from topping my oil off every 400 miles to changing the oil and filter every 2k miles without topping it off at all. I don't think I'll be putting synthetic motor oil in my car again.

Anyways, the built motor project is on hold until the motor decides to go (maybe another 100k miles). The motor is still strong and I continue to drive it 100 miles every day.

Figured that anyone with oil consumption issues might want to know of my results.
