Check Engine and Small Leak Error
In between my 7500 mile and 11,500 mile services, my "check engine" light came on twice. I called my service adviser and he told me the same old "tighten the gas cap" routine. i did that, refilled the tank, cranked the cap closed and clicked it for 30 seconds for fun. Well, when I went in for the 11,500 mile service, I had them check the on-board computer. They checked the computer and found a "small leak error" in the engine. My dealer (Warren Henry, Miami) says they have 3 customers, including me, with the same complaint (check engine light comes on, stays on for a few days, goes off). They know of no fix as of this time but they say Infiniti is aware of the issue. I don't know if that's true. Has anyone else heard of this????
Re: Check Engine and Small Leak Error
What's the actual fault code?
With OBDII systems, when a fault code appears and the MIL appears also. What also happens is a "fault counter program", where over the next couple times you start and drive the car, if the same fault does not reappear in the OBDII computer, then the MIL light disappears, but the code remains in memory.
This may be what's happening.

Re: Check Engine and Small Leak Error
Did they have any idea what the "small leak" might have been?
I guess all you can do is make sure all fluid levels are ok, and that it seems to be running ok, and let them worry about the 'check engine' lights.
If there's any news or developements, let us know.

Re: Check Engine and Small Leak Error
Tell us more , L2T, ..Is it possible it wasn't a 'conventional' leak but a polution control leak that would have triggered the 'light'?.... Also is it possible that the leak was temporary?
Any incite would be appreciated.

Any incite? Like a riot?
It is posible the "leak" can be a pollution control related code.
This is why I'm asking for the exact fault code, number and description. Without this info, you cannot proceed with theory
and diagnosis.

Re: Check Engine and Small Leak Error
If the ECM detects the fault on 2 consecutive "test" cycles it will set the mil. What was the count? It is detecting a failure in the evaporative emission system. Usually a loose gas cap sets a "gross leak" code. Did they do a DTC confirmation test? Sometimes intermit. problems are very difficult to find/duplicate. Most CEL's are caused by a failure of the equipment/sensors used to check the emissions. While the engine/emissions are ok

Of course, LTT, excuse me for 'inciting' you .................... LOL
I asked you for an educated guess. Thought it might be interesting since there was limited info from the dealer. Your sig. told me that you may have had some 'insight'. Thanks......

To L2T's defense, there's hundreds of codes within the OBDII system, from the standard codes to manufacturer specific codes.
Without knowing with code which the OBDII computer stored, most technicians will just be guessing out of their asses.
There are technicians who will use the old fashioned way of diagnosing in addition to the convenience the OBD system offers.

I hear ya. Sounds like problems like that are akin to locating a needle in a haystack. The "old fashioned way" probably takes too long and isn't cost effective, and I doubt that there are as many techs out there anymore that are as good with the Consult 2 as well as good at using that old fashioned way.
The price of progress I guess.

It is all fun with me so no offense shall ever be taken.
It's true, I can guess, as I have much experience as a technician and now represent Infiniti's service department.
Though an educated guess for others may be a blabber of the lips away, I have a responsibility to help resolve situations with facts, accumulated from all the resources accessable to me.(consult2+Infiniti master techs)
That's what Infiniti pays me for and what any client should expect. So cough up some diagnostic printouts or tighten your gas cap 'til your wrist snaps. HAH HAH

Re: Check Engine and Small Leak Error
Wow, That's harsh. And I don't know where the 'attitude' is coming from, so please enlighten me if you can. and I didn't expect you to be offended because none was intended! So why are you? My point that you totally misread b4 was that finding or pinpointing problems on a car these days was akin "to finding a needle etc". No one's trying to minimize your experience and what you could accomplish so ease off on the 'bricks' please. You're reading way too much into my posts- OK. I'm a friendly and helpful kind of guy like a lot are around here and no one intentionally upsets anyone.
As far as coughing up diagnostic printouts are concerned- well, I'll leave that to experts like you, who have access to ,and as you've said, are paid to do.
In case you're wondering I've been around cars for some time myself and know a thing or 2 about mechanicals and electricals, so thanks in advance for recognizing that there are ppl around that know 'something' , even without a scanner in their hands.
Good luck with your job, and my hat's off to your knowledge which we all appreciate that you share with us. I'll be the first to say that at times I need help.
I'll go easy on the gas cap, thank you. Broken wrists would cut into my typing...HAHAHAHA
If you feel the need to respond further to any of this, I ask you to take it to Private Mail. Thanks for listening. I look forward to your informative posts.

Re: Check Engine and Small Leak Error
Hey, everyone deserves a second chance. Learn2Turn, with your expertise in Infinity service, can you tell me if it is easy to program the ECU to turn off the adaptive learning algorithm? Is Infinity going to offer new ECU maps that will increase performance and fuel economy? Can the transmission also be programmed for different (shorter) shift patterns? Glad that Infinity techs are paying attention, maybe you can help us out.
