So I’ve got 1,500 miles on my new short block (total is 8,500 miles on the car) and the damn thing is burning oil once again (1 full quart after 1,500 miles).
Just got the call from the dealer and they’ve put 10-40 oil in my car saying that’s what Infiniti is recommending now to address the infamous oil burning issue… WTF???

Unless it's synthetic, 10W-40 is generally inferior to 10W-30, which is one of the reasons it's seldom recommended anymore for use in new cars. Manufacturers have to add more VI (viscosity index) improvers to the refined product to achieve such a broad viscosity range, and because of that the oil doesn't stand up as well over time. There are a lot of non-synthetic 15W-40 oils on the market that are intended primarily for diesel engines but useable in gasoline engines. As long as temperatures don't get too cold, they're a much better choice than just about any 10W-40. Just my 2-cents.
In any event, that's a pretty lame way to address an oil consumption problem. Apparently Nissan hasn't addressed the underlying cause of increased oil consumption in the revup engines. I have to wonder if the VQ37VHR will have the same problem. Its slightly longer stroke (increased by 4.6 mm over the VQ35) will cause a corresponding increase in piston speeds for any given RPM and, as a general rule, faster piston speeds equate to increased rates of cylinder and ring wear. As a percentage increase the change from 81.4 to 86 is very small so it's not likely to make much of a difference, but it's something to keep in mind.

Can't believe you are going through this twice and can't believe all these oil consumption probs.
Why doesn't inifinit just correct the problems instead of putting the same crap back in like with the 03-04 brakes. Had mine done three times, rotars and pads all around.

It didn't hit me until I read your post, but my oil consumption started when I switched from 10W 30 to 5W 30. I live in a hot southern state and had read that you only need 5W 30 for the cold and it can be too thin in the heat, so from the day I got my G I was using 10W 30 - until I let a friend talk me into using 5W 30 since that is what Infiniti calls for.
I can't believe you are dealing with the same issue on a new motor. Good Luck.
