Question What exactly are we paying for with grounding kits???

Im looking into ordering one. And although Im not a very knowledgeable car person, they all look very similar to me. What is the BIG difference between the $10- $30 kits and the $150-$200 kits?

If you must, get these and save some money rather than spending 150-200 like you're thinking...

I bought all the pieces at a stereo shop for about $50 and cut all the wires to the exact length for my application. If you want to do it, that's the way to go. Don't spend 200 bucks on it. I'm not sure it made any difference, but my car is certainly properly grounded now.

One of the many controversial mods in the VQ community. I haven't used them, so I can't speak by experience. But there's a reason why I haven't spent my money on them.

Supposed to make your electronics run more efficiently (such as brighter interior lights, etc.) but the differences aren't very noticable at all. Overall waste of money. Trust me, I've purchased a $200 kit haha.

SEARCH!! there's many thread on these and the consensus is that on 5AT, it helps the shifting to be a lil more responsive (less delay). On 6MT like mine, eh..can't tell. Only difference i noticed is on my Escort's volt meter, it reads higher perhaps from the better grounding after installation..what that's worth, i can't comment. I order from some dude over in My350z that makes them from Monster Cable for like $50 or so. Bottom line, you're just paying for a set of ground wires precut to a certain length with connectors at the end. So don't bother spending much money on them when alternative are available. I think Grounding Gear runs in the low $100s.

If you just need the ground wires then you can get one on eBay for around $20 to $30 shipped.

the downside to the cheap ones and most of the expensive ones are that they are universal, meaning that there is often tons of slack in the wires hanging around in your engine bay. If you are in Socal, I can make you a custom one for much cheaper and it will look tight. I have made/installed over 100 of these and every single person has said that thier car runs smoother and shifts better in manual mode.

As an "enlightened former skeptic", I can say from personal experience that not all kits are created equal or have the same effects. I believe it's a question of engineering.

On Ebay, you get what you pay for, and the lack of results from some cheap kits and some homemade ones are probably due to this factor, and likely cause much of the multiple posts and feedback from the "Snake-oil" camp.

As sxexcx said, many of the cheap and expensive kits are universal and the results vary. Even with the Stillen that I had which is supposedly Custom for the G35, I think due to the construction, I got poorer results than with the Universal Sun Auto kit that I had!

And even with the good kits, some report varying results which may be due to expectations, lack familiarity with the pre-grounded car's response, or variations in individual engine/ECU/etc.

When you find a particular manufacturer, research some of the feedback on how it actually worked on a particular car. Weeding out all the "snake-oil" comments, ask yourself if the remaining people that actually tried the kit could all be sucked in by hype and all experience the same placebo effects. Especially pay attention to those that were skeptics before. See if there are any "blind" studies or feedback.

For some feedback on this board, try:
https://g35driver.com/forums/reviews/55081-gordgee-s-groundinggear.html

Could all those people be wrong?

Read the issue of Nissan Sport Magazine that reviewed GroundingGear.

After that, you have to make up you own mind.

For me and many of my family and friends (almost all prior skeptics like myself), we'd put GroundingGear on our future cars in a heartbeat!

Can you elaborate on the difference that you felt and the difference in the construction of the wires? Other than length not being cut appropriately, can you give more details as to why you might think the contruction of these other kits to result in poorer result?
