jacking the sedan

Prior to my G35, I never ever had to jack up my cars in order to work underneath them. (I've never owned a sporty car before.) Anyway, after searching through this site, I found a couple links that will really help me out:
Gordgee's "Jacking Your G" thread
jack point locations

Frankly, the thought of lying under my car and trying to torque down bolts while the thing is elevated by 4 jacks gives me the heebie jeebies. Has anyone been unfortunate enough to experience a situation where the vehicle tipped off of the jack stands?? I'm sure I'll get more comfortable the more I do it, but in the meantime, I'd appreciate any other tips or "lessons-learned" to help me avoid learning things the hard way.

By the way, I already know these golden rules:
1) Always jack on a flat, level surface.
2) Never rely exclusively on the floor jack. Always use jack stands before crawling under the car.

As long as you use jacks stands on a level surface you shouldn't have too much too worry about. I think most injuries happen when people rely on a hydraulic jack to work under a car. My Dad has a mini lift in his garage, but I usually just work off of jack stands. I had to use a breaker bar with a pipe to get a couple of bolts off of my exhaust and it's pretty solid.

try laying under a 62 galaxie 500 (sedan of course) and yanking on the tranny. G's will bounce off your chest (comparatively)

Put it on jack stands, but always keep the jack under the car, just in case.

You don't need to jack up all four wheels - I normally just jack one side. It lifts both the front and back wheels off the ground on the one side. Then I put the jack stands there for safety. (I did have the hydraulic jack release on me once - no biggie with the jack stands in place.)

I've had my G up on jack stands tons of times with no issues. We even pulled the motor with it up on a lift and the change in balance didn't change anything. You are fine.

If I'm doing something under the car, I just use ramps with a chock. The only time I jack (snicker) is if I need to pull a wheel. That being said, jack stands are safe, I just think its a little unnecessary for many applications.

Wow, just thought I'd share some info that came with my Craftsman jack stands (model 50182, capacity per pair: 2 1/4 ton):

• Use as matched pair to support one end
of a vehicle only. Use only 1 pair per
vehicle.
• Jack stands are not to be used to
simultaneously support both ends or one
side of a vehicle.
...

Other than "don't buy Craftsman jacks", what are your thoughts?

When I use the front jack point on my sedan, both wheels come off the ground pretty much at the same time. Pretty hard not to use one/two jack stands for one side when you can't lift one wheel off the ground at a time.

i would use this when i'd do oil changes

but if i had to take off the wheels then i used jack stands. i never had a problem with them. even when my whole car were on jackstands.
