I bought my 2003 G35 coupe about 2 weeks ago, and it now has 72,xxx miles on it. I first heard the knocking noise about 3 days after I got it, so I went to get the oil changed. It seemed like it went away for maybe a day, or that might have been my head wanting to think that it wasn't knocking. Anyway, my engine now has a knocking noise while in park and when at a stop light/ stop sign. It seems to be coming from the passenger side in the engine bay. I run only premium 93 octane gas. The car is obviously out of warranty, so what should I do?
I appreciate any help you can give me,
Thanks

Do you think the problem will get worse over time? I'm just afraid of how much the Infiniti dealer is going to want me to pay for them to look at it, etc...
Anybody know?

I checked the service bulletins, and one came up about vibration from the fuel damper. However, after feeling my fuel damper while at idle, it doesn't seem to be causing the knocking. I'm calling the local Infiniti dealer tomorrow. What should I expect?

Technical Service Bulletin, short and sweet; TSB's are generally known issues with cars that get pretty specific. They can be fixed through the dealer for free... with or without warranty I believe. Either way, if you find a TSB that matches your issue you can more than likely fix it yourself, or someone here can walk you through it - more than likely someone's "been there, done that".
Sounds are just really hard to diagnose over the internet, unless it's a really really common problem (ie, axel click/clunk).
Does the sound speed up, slow down, or stop with RPM differences?
Does it act the same reving in neutral as under a load?
How loud is the knock? Like a diesel? Can you ony hear it inside? How about outside?
If you turn your head, cough, and grab your ***** does it go away? (don't answer that one...)
Were you just driving when the noise started (be honest)? Or were you driving the **** out of it?
I take it you didn't see the oil? Did you do the last oil change?
Now that we are on the subject of oil... I'm guessing you didn't change the oil as soon as you bought the car? It was only until the knocking occured that you went and changed it. Sadly, who knows how long that oil had been in the car before you bought it (this is why I ask if you by any chance saw the oil).
I think about 2, maybe 3 weeks back someone had an issue with engine knock because of oil consumption. You might wanna keep a close eye on the oil level... like... atleast once a week. What oil did you use? Synthetic or not?

-I can only hear when in park and at idle.
-It's not that loud, and it was actually my mother that pointed it out to me. You can only hear it inside, unless you put your ear up the passenger side front fender. You can hear it even better there.
-I was giving my mom a ride in "my new car," so I was going pretty soft on it, and it was the night that I got it and drove back from Birmingham (where I picked it up.)
-Worried about the noise, I rushed to Jiffy Lube (I know, I know. I'm ashamed at myself.) at got it changed the next day (the day after I picked it up) with "synthetic mix," as I didn't have $70 in my pocket at the time to go for the full synthetic.
The oil level on my dipstick now is about the same as it was when I picked the car up. I'm going to call the Infiniti dealership tomorrow and see if I can come by and let them take a look and drive it so they can listen for the sound. Some guy told me that a dirty air filter could also somehow cause knocking, which gives me an excuse to install my JWT popcharger tomorrow, too. Being out of warranty, what kind of hit should I expect?
By the way, I really appreciate all this help you're giving me.

Well I called the dealership today, and they said I should have someone I know check it out, which I did. My family friend/mechanic said it could be the fuel pump. Then I went to a local Nissan dealership, and I got someone to listen to it, and he thought it was the fuel pressure regulator, but he wanted $45 for a diagnostic check, so I'm just going to have to go across town to have the Infiniti dealership look at for $100 an hour. Ugh...
TSB are just addendum to FSM to help techs diagnose things discovered after FSM was printed. TSB are only free when under warranty.
"I bought my 2003 G35 coupe about 2 weeks ago, and it now has 72,xxx miles on it" ...................said to say always seems to happen when someone buys a used car out of warranty, the forget that most vehicles are undermaintained and never taken to dealer wvery 90 days [oil changes] so the technicans can find things to bill Nissan Warranty to repair.
Have the dealership pull the previous records and see how good or bad what you purchased was maintained!
In 5 years previous owners can do a lot of damage!
