Help! Oil filter won't budge
Help! Oil filter won't budge
I've always changed my own oil. But this time the fricking soda can of a filter won't budge. I have pretty much crushed it like the little soda can that it is. I've tried every wrench I have, even my bare hands. Won't move a hair. WTF?
Re: Help! Oil filter won't budge
if the very end of the filter is still in decent shape, i would get the little caps that you can use with a socket wrench. If not, you might just have to punch or drill a hole in the filter, stick a screwdriver in there and twist it off that way.
Re: Help! Oil filter won't budge
I've got one of those caps to use with the socket wrench. It just spins around. I guess I need to get a metal one because the plastic one I have seems to flex too much. I used one of those gripper wrenches with the rubber strap and got it off that way. I thought about punching a hole and using a screwdriver, but I really didn't want to do that. Thanks for your help.
Re: Help! Oil filter won't budge
This way is messy, BUT it will work. Take a extra long screwdriver and drive it right through the (oil) filter. The screwdriver should go from one side through the other side without hitting the bolt the filter is screwed onto. Leave enough room to torque the filter a quarter to half revolution. Make sure you don't go right in the middle of the filter and hit the bolt the filter screws onto! When it breaks loose pull the screwdriver out and then just use your hand to unscrew it the rest of the way.
Good Luck!

Re: Help! Oil filter won't budge
I've had the same issue over the years so I do this now and it works great.
I get a wrench to fit, and glue (contact cement) some rubber (inner-tube) on the inside to grip the filter. -- See pic.
The filters are supposed to go on 2/3 of a turn after the gasket contacts, but it usually tightens up a lot and makes removal difficult.
I've not had any more problems with tight filter removal.

No, No, No, Use a monkey wrench bro. There is plenty of clearance to get one of those bad boys in there. It is much cleaner than the poking the hole through the filter. I've done that before on my last car. Cleanup was not fun.

I was having some trouble this past weekend when changing my oil. I used a sheet of sandpaper wrapped around the filter, and it gave enough grip to turn the thing off.
