Overheating

Every once in a while when its hot and I get stuck in traffic the needle
starts to go up on the high side which always gets me nervous, as soon
as I get out of the traffic and move, it goes back to normal. Last year my
mechanic said its probably the thermostat so I said change it but noticed
today it happened again, could it be the thermostat already? When the car
cools down I will check the fluid level.

Any of you guys had the same problem?

Thanks
GBoy

I had a car that did this and it was the head gasket leaking air into the water passages, blocking coolant flow at low RPM. A mechanic can test for gases in the radiator.

when the car is cold (has been off for more than an hour) check the coolant level and make sure it there is sufficient coolant in the car. You might have a coolant leak from somewhere.

If it was me I would check my basics. Coolant level, no build of debris on condensor and radiator. I believe but I'm a newbee their are 2 electric cooling fans, maybe 1 is not working causing the temp to rise to an uncomfortable level. hope this helps!

u might want to see if ur radiator cap spring is good, compress it with ur fingers and notice if it gets stuck, even for a split second

+1

Check the coolant level and make sure the condensor and radiator are clean. You may also want to have your coolant flushed.

Back when I had the stock cooling system (radiator/fans), even while I had a supercharger and later twin turbo here in Phoenix (115 degrees) my temp never went up.

I had this same problem and i had the dealer examine it as i was under warranty and they told me that the radiator fins were bent somehow not allowing air to smoothly pass through and also they had to flush the system and replace the upper and lower radiator hose.....hope this helps out...also, do you know if you have a electric or mechanical fan system, because mine was mechanical.

Thanks guys for all your input, I just checked the fluid levels
and they are both low, so will fill up the reservoir and radiator
and see if that fixes the problem.

How oftern do you guys get the radiator flushed, and could I use the
BMW's coolant that I have sitting in the garage for the wifey's car
of course mixed 1/2 with water.

Important to not trust temperature gauge until you KNOW its accuracy by correlating it to ecu sensed coolant temperature.
The ecu has software that starts degrading performance when coolant exceeds 199.9F [so called summer overheat protection] by retarding timing progressively 1 degree of advance per 5F.

Year after year the new cooling system degrades a little, and the RESERVE gets smaller and smaller, eventually it becomes cumlative to the point where component REPLACEMENT is necessary IF YOU DESIRE TO MAINTAIN AS NEW PERFORMANCE.

Why there is only a 6 year 70k warranty, after that you are one your own unless you purchase the 100k extension.

Dam car, my garage got rid of an air pocket so we figured that would do the trick, we let it run for 10 minutes in the heat with air on and the needle
stayed right in the middle where its been for over 5 years. Left the garage
and after a few minutes the needle moved up and got close to the danger
zone, I had to drive in traffic and stop and go with the temperature outside
being over 30 degrees celcius. When the needle got high I would shut off the
air and the needle would start to go back down a bit, then cranked up air
again and the needle would go up, the car is a sedan 03 with 150,000 kilometres. Looks like this overheating is related to the air conditioning.
I'm wondering if this is going to cost me big time with a compressor or
condensor, my garage said you can get into the thousands with that stuff.
Looks like I might have to go to the stealership to have this diagnosed.

Anybody out there have to change major components of their air conditioning.
