my 03 5AT would tink and clatter when it first started, but it went away after a few seconds. Not sure if its the same sound your having, but I never could figure out what it was or a fix. I thought it was lifters since it only did it on a cold start after sitting ofr hours, but even if I put oil in the engine right before starting... it still did it...

Does it go away when the engine warms up?

it gets less noticable when warm but I don't really notice after it's warm. Does the water pump make a ticking noise before going bad?

The noise is coming from the center part on the front of the engine bay

You need to determine whether its coming form within the engine or an external part… if internal, it could be minor valve tap – it is common for this to happen until engine is up to temp – since you say it goes away after a few minutes, this is likely the issue… however, since you haven’t really narrowed it down much, it could still be multitudes of other things.

Typically a stethoscope or tube would be used to isolated the source of the sound – but in this case you should be able to determine if its coming from the valve area with naked ear… get close enough to engine (please don’t have ay loose articles than can get caught in moving parts) and listen closely to each side near the valve covers… if the sound is more prominent there, its probably valve tap and I wouldn’t worry about it since it goes away when engine reaches temp – if the sound continues after several minutes of driving or even gets worse, its likely loose valve lash and an adjustment would b suggested (that’s what I’m dealing with on my car).

If the sound is not coming from the valve area, you need to be more precise with the area – the “center part front of engine bay” is still a very broad area – and is not enough info to diagnose.

Hrm. I have a ticking noise also and it's real annoying. If I'm under the hood, it's coming from the left side of the engine. The noise is permanent...from start up until I turn off the engine...and of course the ticking intervals get faster as I rev the car. Could it be this valve lash you're talking about? Does it cost a lot to fix?

sounds like it could be valves... and yes valve job on this car is quite expensive - have a "trusted" mechanic take a listen to confirm cause and determne if its worth it or not to adjust (in many cases its not worth it).

Any word on this issue?

My car would do this every once in a while at start up but seems to be getting worse.
This morning it scared the crap out of me it was so loud and lasted longer then the 20 seconds it had in the past.
I even shut it off this moring after 30 seconds or so because it was so loud. It lasted for a little while after I started it up again and had a slight ticking once I started driving for a short time.
It has me a little worried and I am sure if I drop it off at the dealer it will not do it.

My car does this too but it's only a minor ticking. It is constant. I just figured it was the injectors. Check your oil. Low oil could be a cause for something that loud.

mine makes a ticking noise also. especially at low rpms. brought to the dealer, and they said that its my PCV valve. they changed it to a different one, and made the same noise. said maybe my aftermarket intake was making it louder....

Typically on an older car one way to determine the source of a ticking sound was with a timing light. If I remember how it went it was something like this (in relation to the light flashes) lower go up. That is if your ticks are lower in frequency than the flashes it is most likely valve train related.
