Re: cold knock on start up

Yes I get a little clattering sometimes at cold startup. Only for a second or less. I noticed the same sort of noise in my Sedan and my 2k2 Max. As far as I know it's normal.

That is weird happens to mine once in a while but just as the key is turned almost like something under the hood. The sound is just one knock. Any ideas on why or what it is? I am assuming it can't be normal if it only happens at certain times.

What weight Mobil 1? Hopefully you are using 5W/30 and not the 15W/50. The thick stuff is not what you want in a VQ.

probably just valvetrain noise while the oil is still circulating throughout the engine. a lot of cars sound like pure a$$ when they're first started in the cold.

if it's for a few seconds in the morning, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you get the same noise sitting at a red light after driving to work, the I'd worry. You may want to check your oil level and make sure you're not low. Our cars are known for consuming oil, well I don't know if it's known...but my car does.

The timing chain system is hydraulic. It takes a second for the oil pressure to come up and tighten up the tensioner...so the chains are making the noise.

If you get a knock, or an almost grinding noise sound for about a second, right after starting the car (on a cold start), that is normal. It's the timing chain, running through a tensioner. Once the chain pulls some oil through it, it goes away. But it's normal and nothing to worry about.
