Blown Engine: 03 Sedan Stock 112k
Blown Engine: 03 Sedan Stock 112k
My Story:
Stock 03 G35 Sedan w/ 112,000 miles. Wife was driving @ 80 mph. Had approx. 3500 miles since last oil change. Noticed the engine was making some noise the day before, so added 1.5 qts. of 5W30 to top up. Engine did not run hot prior to implosion.
Car now @ Nissan dealership in Toledo, Oh. Now awaiting report from dealership. So, I have read about problems w/ VQ engines burning oil. Is there any recourse w/ Infiniti? My car is probably worth about $13k. What is best alternative? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Your 03 doesn't have the engine that has the oil consumption problems (aka rev up). But sorry about your loss. An used engine might be the way to go as a rebuilt one is going to cost alot of dough
Also, follow up questions....
1.) Does the 350Z engine swap in easily?
2.) Anyone know of reputable mechanic to do swap in either Columbus, Oh, or Toledo, Oh?
3.) What about built engine options?
Thx.

Sounded like oil was not getting to top of engine. Not sure how to describe the noise. Did not overfill.
I bought an engine this am. Paid $1650 shipped to the garage. Engine came out of a wrecked 03 G35 that only had 7400 miles on it.
Getting it installed at a Nissan dealership for $1600.
Hopefully, will be done by early next week.

wait
so you heard a noise, and added 1.5 qts?
did you even check the level?
if not, you blew your own motor up

Geez, you guys are harsh. Of course I checked the oil level! Then I added 1.5 qts to reach fill level. C'mon, some credit please. Have had this car since 03 and I have managed to put oil in for 6 years w/o blowing the engine...
So your G has always consumed oil or was this the first time you noticed the consumption issue? I've had my 6 y/o G for a little over 4 years now and it consumes about 1/2 QT every 5K-6K miles which what my old VQ30 did. I'm just curious if your G went from no consumption to major consumption in the blink of an eye.
BTW, it sounds like you got a good deal on the engine swap. It's really not that hard to swap out motors these days (~10-12 hours).

did they find out the cause of the "blown engine yet?"
u should check components in the engine bay...
sorry to hear about ur loss
but thats a pretty cheap BLOCK, and install price...let alone at a dealership..

Details are sketchy on what happened bec/ my wife was driving my car, while I was in heard Ford Explorer with our 2 boys (car seats). We had driven to inlaws separately and I agreed to take the 1 & 3 yrs. old boys for the drive home.
So, I got from her: The engine was not overheating as she was checking bec/ I told her the engine sounded like it was knocking on the drive up. The engine went boom and there was black smoke.
My engine tended to lose .5 qts. w/ every 2500-3000 miles. I had about 4000 miles since last oil change.
It will be nice to have an engine w/ only 7k miles in it...
BTW, any no of anything else I should have done w/ the engine pulled for maintanance or mods made easy w/ engine out?
Thx

Knocking then boom, sounds like a bearing went bye bye then she threw a rod. In any case you definately need a whole new engine (long block). You probably had an oil pressure issue now or at some other point... sludge, pump going out, ran too low at some point....who knows.
