Removed Intake Resonator =)
Removed Intake Resonator =)
ok guys, i just spent part of my day removing that pesky intake resonator. If you dont know, it is the piece that your stock intake box connects to on the bottom. It is removed by 2 bolts that are #(*&%(#% to get out. well, not that bad.
i dont know if it is any faster, but it does sound a tad better. im sure it is faster, but by so little that it is not noticable. my next step is to completely seal off the bottom half of the intake box (it is all basically a resonator as well). I was goign to glue some stuff i bought at Home Depot today to seal it off, but im hoping to find a better and more permanent way to do it with a custom fabricated piece of plastic.
if someone with some experience making plastic stuff would like to help, im sure many people would be interested.
btw, i know this definitely does something good because it has brought back that whistle that my JWT popcharger had when going WOT. BIG =)

Re: Removed Intake Resonator =)
its not only a resonator but also a trap to collect junk from sticking to your filter...
i would highly recommend not removing this or plugging it!
unless you have a cone filter...

Re: Removed Intake Resonator =)
I originally removed it and plugged the hole, didn't like the sound.
After reinstallation (those 2 bolts are a b@%&h!!!) I got a deeper sound that I found more pleasing.
I agree w/ GRider35c about the debris, and I believe that the additional air volume with the resonator helps with the (slight) pressurization of the stock airbox at speed.
Happy Modding!

Re: Removed Intake Resonator =)
I don't think that's a trap for debris as much as a water drain.
I think if you check, there would be no debris in there.
If it is a junk collector, how often do you think it needs to be cleaned out?

i dont think it needs to be cleaned out, unless you live in very dusty and dirty area, or near a construction site or something...
but im sure its a trap for debris. if it wasnt there, then small rocks and crap would block your air filter...

After almost one year of driving (25K km's) all that had accumulated was a small pebble and a few small pieces of leaf.
I do agree that this box acts to create a high pressure zone ahead of the inlet filter -- particularly at higher speeds and the ram air effect, ie' "power duct"

Yes I have been cut free from the resonator/water catch for 2000 miles and my K&N still doesn't even have a dust stripe on it. I check every day like a good boy too. Oh and a grit of sand or two.

Re: Removed Intake Resonator =)
well, I cannot argue about the pressurization as there is no real way to prove this, but as for dust collecting, that is the purpose of the filter. If you get stuff on it, just take it out and brush it off. you can re-oil it if you want (for K&N people).
i plan on connecting a hose to the bottom hole that will lead to a box that i will place in my bumper. it is like the Gruppe-M design. should be intersting and should help get more cold air.

Mine was removed first week....
I think it's main purpose is to keep the intake quiet!!
THe Z car is supposed to be the model with the sporty intake noise....not the G.

Hey OldVFRGuy,
What were your (audible) results with the resonator removed?
I actually thought the removal made the intake more quiet and whistley (is that a word?)
When I reinstalled, the sound seemed deeper. Just my experience....people hear things differently......just look at the exhaust posts!

Re: Removed Intake Resonator =)
I'm with oldvfrguy on this one. My intake sounds louder with the resonator removed. I have noise coming from both front and rear (Stillen exhaust) now. I might put the resonator back in just because it's so loud though.
Re: Removed Intake Resonator =)
Remember.. the box on the inlet side of the air filter is more of an "air box" than a resonator. It could argued that is acts as a damper because of the size and volume but its main purpose is to create a positive pressure area ahead of the air filter.
The resonator is actually located on the OEM intake tube on the sedans and coupes. The 350Z does not have this "appendage" hanging off the bottom of its intake tube which is essentially a straight piece of pipe.
The Stillen intake system includes a modified air box, which in my opinion is the best of both worlds as they also use a cone filter.

Re: Removed Intake Resonator =)
Nutty... the principal of a body (car) moving through air is that there is a high pressure zone created on the leading surface and a low pressure area on the trailing surface -- race cars drivers call this "draft". It stands to reason that at a certain speed, the air box via the ram-effect becomes pressurized. There will be a small pressure drop across the inlet filter still leaving a positive pressure in the intake tube.
At a standstill and lower speeds the pressure in the intake tube should be at slight vacuum because the air box will be at essentially zero pressure -- If this was not the case, your car would blow air out rather suck through the intake.
I see no real advantage to plugging the hole in the bottom of the air box because the inlet side is much larger than the drain anyways... but then I see no harm in plugging the hole either, based on what I have experienced in over 30,000 kms.
Sorry to go on so long. None of what I have said is meant to insult anyone's intelligence -- my apologies if I hit a nerve with anyone.
Cheers!

Re: Removed Intake Resonator =)
my new plan is this:
i plan to connect a hose to the hole on the bottom of the intake box, and connect that hose to a air scoop that I will put in the bumper (gruppe M design). This should help to collect even more air. This is essentially the way the Gruppe M intake works and that thing costs a freaking 1000 dollars. It will require some cutting of the foam that is in the way and perhaps some insulatoin to wrap the hose with. I will post my end results and maybe a DIY if it works.
what are your opinions on this? think this is a sound plan? any input?
i also had another idea to remove the back half of the lower intake (resonator? or pressurizer?), and connect a larger hose to that which would connect to a larger size scoop in the bumper. However, if this part of the air box really does work to pressurize the entire box, this may not be wise.
any ideas are very welcome.
