Re: Blackstone lab results on my G35.

How do you go about getting your oil tested?
Do you have to pull a sample yourself? (if so, how?)
Or can you get it done while you are at the dealership getting an oil change?

I wouldn't mind getting this done and see what that little engine is up to =P

Either you do it yourself or ask teh dealer. They usually can do it too. They give you little bottles and you just fill it up when its draining. And mail it to them. Do a yahoo search for Blackstone Labs and it should bring up the site. $20 a test.

I just ordered a test kit. The kit is free and the test cost $20.00.

Re: Blackstone lab results on my G35.

What those tests and others posted for other oils PROVES that on a new G35 engine you must be very careful about the first 20,000 miles of oil changes NO MATER how good the synthetic oil are!

They also show that 90 days or 3,750 miles is about right for conventional [low cost] oils...........7,500 miles would be EXTREME [even with the best oils] if as new performance and extreme longevity was expected beyond warranty.

I am still concerned with the small size/volume of the oil filter, the oil maybe fine chemically, but the particle count [size and shape] may be eating away at bearing material [obvious from high copper and tin].

But then again how many are concerned with engine performance at 200,000 miles. Great to be so thoughtful for the next owner, an important listing in the "Book of Good Deeds".

A better use of funds might be the installation of the Stillen oil pan extension to increase the volume by 1 quart......that way you could lengthen interval by 20-25%. It would pay for itself in 2-3 years in oil change savings [with sythetics].

Re: Blackstone lab results on my G35.

Q45tech, as always you are so helpful.
Would you recommend using a bigger filter like M-110 or 118? (I forget the actual part number, but there are 2 Mobil 1 filters people recommend, and one is the same size and the other is a little bigger). Would be a good idea to use the slightly bigger one?

Also, suppose I wanted to use oil tests to see if the UR crank pulley was safe to use. would I just do this:

test/change oil, install crank pulley, test/change oil
and then look for increase in lead content?

Re: Blackstone lab results on my G35.

The question is how much of what [metal] is in the filter and how much is in the oil............to determine REAL total wear rates.
By the time you notice [other than dissassembly and measuring bearing thickness] oil analysis can only tell you HISTORY.

If the wear number suddenly go up after going down what do you do. Depending on ONE sample is error prone.

Could it be possible that 2 identical samples come out EXACTLY the same with no variance..........unlikely!
