The HR head gaskets were used in the GTM block since the coolant passages do not match DE head gaskets.

Sound Performance said they had no problems using HKS head gaskets on sleeved or non sleeved motors so I'll keep the stock DE passages.

EDIT: The honda guys that have used studs that are tapped/screwed into the lower-mid portion of the block to support the cylinders, find small studs, that are the same alloy as the block, and use the strongest locktite available (green?) putting only 2ft lb tq, on the stud. I dont recommend anyone try it without extensive research first. Just seems like any extra support, when making high HP, or a high revving motor, would help.

Andrei: Let me know how it works out for you. I am building a vq40de and will be doing a similar procedure to the block, but my guards will be custom..
BTW, great find there, I appriciate the picture comparison..

Here is an iron sleeved VQ compared to a closed block. Pic is from Injected Performance.

Got a block today. I'm going to weld it shut probably this year and take it to a machine shop to have it decked and bored 0.20 over for some Wiseco pistons. Rest is Manley rods or Pauter. Want Manley because they are forged in the US. Stock crank. ACL bearings. GTM billet main girdle with billet C caps. L19 head studs. Nismo 8000RPM oil pump with the steel gear should hold 9000RPM without breaking the gear off like the SP 350z did with a Revup pump. Revup pump was never intended to support 9k RPM. Heads will have to be done by Head Games most likely. All for another thread.

Do you think it would be a good idea to weld in the VQ35DE block guards made by Supertech since they already have holes drilled for coolant? http://store.excelerateperformance.c.../i-252955.aspx Or maybe drill them out some more?

Or would it be better to close the deck completely and then drill coolant passages? How do you know where to drill to make coolant passages? Is that something that is determined by the head gaskets used?
I supposed it would be a great ideal to weld the block guards in. It depends on the material there made of.

We laid the gasket over the block and traced out the coolant passages

I saw the permanent marker left over on the block. The block guards are 6061 just like the block. Shouldn't have a problem welding.

How did the shop measure the exact dept of the block guards they used compared to the gasket surface on the block? I suppose there is a really small margin of error and they cant be too high compared to the gasket surface or too low even if the surface gets decked to make it even.

Whatever the maximum duty cycle is on 1200cc or 1400cc injectors with E85 gas so I don't know.

I found pics of some block guards installed. It says to press them 1.5mm below the surface and just use Loc-Tite. I don't think it would work for long and it would not welded 1.5mm down.

The VQ35HR we built months ago runs to this day with no over heating issues in fact it runs very smooth. This setup runs twin turbo HKS.

You have to close the deck before you bore.
