Building my own home-brew oil cooler, using an oil filter sandwich adapter with a built-in thermostat. Have an 08 sedan (RWD). Here's the question- is it correct that I want to mount the cooler such that the hoses attach at the top of the cooler unit, so that it doesn't drain into the pan when the engine's off? Because if it does drain, I won't get an accurate reading from the dipstick (because the cooler isn't holding it's own additional capacity). This sound correct?

The only issue then becomes, when I want to change out the oil, I can't get all the old stuff too easily.

I know that most oil cooler setups are coming in and out from the top of the cooler... I thought that they act as a sump so you just put more oil in. I think the most important part of your cooler would be allowing a good mixture inside so its not just passing the hot oil through and leaving the colder oil to sludge up.
