Wow. I go a day without browsing the board and a pioneering engine gets blown. Sorry to hear about the loss.

At least you now have the opportunity to turn expensive lemons into sweet lemonade.

Good Luck Gurgen!

Re: Bad day ... IT happened... the engine blew...

Hey Guys

[/b]I NEED YOUR HELP[/b]

Just talked to TechnoSquare, and they said that they physically do not have the space to park my car in their shop. So, I need to send the car down to L.A. (and I do not want to park it at my parents' house for a few reasons) until the engine is close to coming in (a few weeks).

If there is anyone that would not mind the car being parked outside their house (if it is in an ok neighborhood, so there is a low chance of a break in) for a little while, please let me know (pm or post here). Thanks very much.

Gurgen

Yeah, I haven't had compression in cylinder six for months now.... It still puts down 340 to the wheels.... My tuning was completely wrong, it wasn't ATIs fault, it was mine (for believing it was tuned right).

Gurgen;

VERY sorry for you loss. It really seems you made every effort to tread carefully, and were repaid with this!

Here's a crazy idea to think about; why not give up on rebuilding the motor and just figure out if an RB25DET or RB26DETT will fit? You can buy these for $3,500 or less and boost them all you want. You can get to way over 400hp with stock bottom end.

I don't have THAT much pioneering spirit

But...

Here is the latest:

I am going all out:

Arias pistns (9.3:1)
Pouter rods
Full decking
Full sleeving
ARP Studs

etc...

Gurgen,

I feel sorry for your loss.

Also I want to point out that you're doing much more pioneering by building VQ. RB-series engines have over 12 years of pioneering behind them.

I admire your spirit, you're a true enthusiast. Keep up that great work !!!

Yes it was very difficult to find a machine shop willing to install the AEBS sleeves. I spent two days going from machine shop to machine shop. I live in the Seattle area so it is not like LA, but you get the idea. I finally found one that had done several on Hondas. One note, both Darton and AEBS do not install their sleeves in house, but actually send it out to a near by machine shop. This is why I decided to find a local shop to install mine. AEBS is probably one of the leading shops with info on our vq35, including headwork and bottom end. But their work is $$. When I looked into having them do my headwork(porting, polishing, valves, valve seats, springs, retainers) price was nearly $5,000. Way out of my league.

Re: Bad day ... IT happened... the engine blew...

damn, sorry to hear about your motor dude. have you considered shot peening your rods and having the block completely balanced? in regards to the RB transplant, it would be very nice, but too bad its against the law to transplant a motor older than your car's manufacture date into the car. stick with the VQ dude, i'm sure your ambition will take the VQ to new heights and be of tremendous value to the rest of us in the future.

MOTOP, Profile...

Thanks ... I too do not see the RB transplant to be feasible at all... the VQ is going to be very capable with a few thousand dollars invested in it...

Re: Bad day ... IT happened... the engine blew...

Joe....

Talked to SGP (Kyle) today... their prices are pretty reasonable. I forgot to ask about the top end though... He said that installing the sleeves will be $400 labor. $1200 for boring/honing, and putting everything together.... the sleeves (AEBS) can be had for $120 each ($720). So, the installed price for the sleeves is almost 1/2 of that of Darton's (they asked ~$2000 total).

So,
$1670 (rods/pistons)
$379 (ARP studs)
$1200 (bottom end work)
$250 (half-decking the block - forgot to ask full decking price)

TOTAL (no sleeving): $3499

+
$720 (AEBS Sleeves)
$400 (sleeves install)

TOTAL: $1120 (+$3499)= $4619

Damn it... I am broke now, that's for sure....
