I have had the original version for about a year now. The tapping you hear is normal valve train noise. The increased engine noise you are hearing is from the decrease in sound dampening when they cut out the thick casting portion out and replace it with the sheet aluminum part. Also removing the plastic engine cover also provides some dampening.

The cats make the exhaust just slightly louder and slightly deeper. Most people won't even notice, but you'll be able to just barely tell the difference.
