the_coupe's NA engine build thread
ok ladies. some of you are aware of my smoking @ cold start/OCC issue on my 04 with 66k. im not normally the type to just replace something that CAN be upgraded, but not do it. so this is where it starts. 05 coupe AT nonrev motor with around 15k replaced for OC. luckily my boy (whom i work with) had the motor sitting in his shop so i got a free longblock to build on. lol i picked up the motor on thursday, got it tore down to the shortblock on friday, and completely tore down on saturday along with some cleaning. my future goals for this car (when completed) would be to have 350-400rwhp...obviously a boosted goal. BUT i'm doing this build as NA cuz it will prolly be atleast a year before i can afford a vortech. i have money now cuz i sold one of my cars, good timing since i needed a fresh motor anyways
build list will include:
BC stage 2 cams with BC valve springs and Ti retainers
P&P heads and plenums
CP 11:1 pistons
Manley rods
ACL bearings
HR headgasket mod and HR headbolts
Pathy/qx4 rear coolant pipe mod
revup oil pump
external bottom end balancing
I plan on tuning with Osiris. Im picking up a Competition stage4 clutch/flywheel kit, DW 600cc injectors and walbro pump from a fellow member, so the clutch kit will get balanced with the bottom end and the fuel upgrades will be stored for when i add some boost.
before anyone chimes in, yes i know im going with highER compression. .7 higher CR wont hurt with 8-10 psi. with a higher CR with some boost ill EASILY touch 400rwhp with the setup i'll have. i dont have plans to get more and more and more power with this car. im happy with how it performs now cuz i dont do anything to NEED this kinda power...its just my good looking DD with a good retune with the fuel upgrades, it will still be just as strong as reliable......but thats a diff story if i wanted more boost.
so yeah, here it goes.....
motor in the back of my pathy
on the stand
timing set and rod caps removed
heads removed. see how gunky the pistons were? #2 rings were gunked/seized up and left a lil rust ring on the wall....prolly from sitting for so long.
heads off. cam journals and valve buckets all looked good!
then i put the timing covers in the parts washer to get them....clean!
and i got all the grooves cleaned up too....specialty tool used was a snap-on pocket screwdriver
and the cylinder walls look real good minus the #2 having a lil build up.
i plan on taking the block to my machinist to have him mic out the cylinders to find out if i will have a tight enough p2w clearance for std bore pistons or if honing wont suffice and i'll have to bore them. once i get that figured out, then i'll order the rods and pistons, BC valvetrain has been ordered tho.
the rod and main bearings looked great as did the crank journals! i'll plastigage the mains to see if i'll be able to run std acl bearings, BUT i already got my oem sizes to use based on the block/crank stamps and using the esm to match the bearings up. once i get the rods in, i'll plastigage them too and get them fitted with the proper bearings....hopefully std as well.
to be continued.....

just dropped the block off at the machine shop after it sat in the parts cleaner for a few hours. hes gonna mic out the cylinders and lmk if i'll be ok to run std bore pistons and keep within CPs spec of .003" p2w clearance. if not, i'll bore it out. and hes gonna price me out for doing the machining the water inlets for use of the HR headgaskets.

so i went ahead and ordered the 96mm pistons. it woulda costed me the same amount having him mic the bores and THEN hone the block with the tq plate as if just boring it out with the tq plate lol. so i ordered the 96mm 11:1 cp pistons and manley rods.....for a nicer deal than the bc order
and i so happy cuz i got my nismo on naowwwwww! its

once all the bolts are out....pry it til it starts seperating up top then work ur way down. the dowel pins towards the bottom might make it a lil tough tho....just work it evenly. nah, u tryna paint some up?
what are stock pistons/rods/cams worth these days? in perfect condition fresh out an 05 nonrev motor with 15k??
