Replacing the spark plug well seals in the valve covers
#121
I changed my spark plugs the other day and didn't really notice any oil on mine. I'm almost at 126K miles as well. I do need to replace my Y-Pipe ordered a Megan racing one should be arriving soon.
I'm really thinking that they are using some kind of aircraft gasket or something. I mean common sense tells me if they say they are made by Vector Engineering and that website I found (several others also) sell aircraft gaskets made by them. I did notice though that gaskets were about 7 bucks a piece on that site, so if R+D were to buy 6 that's about 42 dollars and they probably want to make some profit, so I don't think 60 bucks for them is that much out of line then. I'd still rather purchase them myself though if I do eventually need to replace my valve covers.

Glad I found this post cause i replace my plugs today and walah so thanks! Oil on spark plug Driver side has a little on 6 but passenger side number 1 had alot. One guy posted on page 8 the perfect rememedy. Replace valve cover gasket and RTV seal around the plugs. Why do you guys make it seam so complicated?

A lot of guys didn't want to use RTV to seal it back up. There are various Nissan seals that look like they fit but you find out later they will leak. I searched parts databases and found a few that had some of the same dimensions but could only be ordered through certain channels. Also some guys don't want to pay $250 for a full rebuild kit or $60 for a seal kit that still may leak. I would rather buy a brand new oem vc or take the extreme route remove the baffle make a mold and make a seal from a few tubes of red RTV. I didn't feel like doing all that so I just put some rtv on it and called it a day. If I ever revisit this problem I may do it and see how it turns out.

It was stated a few pages back that the Maxima covers do not work and the Maxima seals are also incorrect.
EDIT: I just saw the other thread that shows the 04/05 Maxima VCs do work, but need to be modified. Those seals can't be replaced either if I'm understanding it correctly.

Anyone else using the modified Maxima VCs? If this a solid and viable option, wouldn't this method be equally as easy and not as expensive as the OE method of replacing the VCs and gaskets?

Another thing to consider is why doesn't the crossover tube work? If the maxima ports are smaller then this would be a bad idea for FI guys and possibly everyone if the difference is significant enough.

That is a good question. Perhaps someone who's done the Max VC swap can explain why we need a different crossover tube. ie. too short, different diameters, etc.
