Question about engine compression

I would like to know how I can find out the compression numbers for each of my cylinders. How do I go about doing this? Is it a DIY or do I have to go to the mechanics to do so? If so, how much will it cost? Thanks.

The DIY method is not as accurate as the professional method where they hook up an electronic analyzer to your car. Found this article with a simple search of Google. Read it for more info.

You can get a compression tester at autozone or any autoparts store. First what you do is unplug all the spark plug wires or coil packs from the cylinders and make sure you know where each one goes. Make sure they touch no metal or other spark plug wires or coil packs. Then you attach the end of the tester to one of the cylinders like where the spark plug wire or coilpack would go. Then you have a friend read the compression gauge while someone in the car cranks the car for 'X' amount of times with there foot on the gas. I totally forgot how many times you crank the motor for. This is the general way you would do a compression test. Hope this helps
