Oil Consumption..Synthetic Oil

I'm the original owner of 03 G35 Coupe. I've been using synthetic for a while. I seem to be burning more oil than usual in the past couple of years.
I was recommended to use a higher weight oil, like a 10-40.
Anyone using a more heavy weighted oil?

how much oil are you burning?

I have the same question too. I'm burning a bit of oil (1/3 of quart every 1,000 miles).

My G hardly loses any oil over 6,000 miles, but my wife's Pacifica with a 3.8 lump burns oil pretty bad. At one point, I thought I noticed a difference switching from the recommended 5w-20 to a 5w-30, or a 10w-30, but since that first "maybe that helped.." moment, it doesn't seem to make any difference. Last couple years, it's burning oil too quickly with any weight oil to keep good track of whether the heavier weight helps.

Have you considered switching to a high-mileage formulation oil first, before changing weight? Supposedly helps with oil consumption, but again, Your Mileage May Vary, literally.

With 121K on mine, it's just now starting to burn just shy of a quart in 7500 miles. I have always used Synthetic oil (M1, Amsoil). I did use conventional oil for the break in and I "drove it like I stole it" during break in. Yes you can use a heaver weight oil, as long as it doesn't get too cold where you live.

My Son's 2006 Jeep started life on conventional oil and he tried synthetic, and it drank oil like a sailor on shore leave. He went back to conventional and has had no problems since.

I did just the opposite. For the first 100,000 miles of my car's life I put nothing but synthetic in it....until it started consuming oil at the rate of 1QT per 500 miles. Once I switched to conventional the consumption slowed considerably. 50,000 miles later, still using conventional and I consume about a quart every 3,000 miles.

Mobile Delvac is the best oil I ran through my SR while drifting, so I had to start using it on my VQ. Oil consumption pretty much halted.

I'm currently using Pennzoil Platinum 10w30. Bought the car w/ 75k and the previous owner brought it to the dealership to get maintenance work done so I'm assuming dino oil was always used.

If it states in your owners manual that you can use synthetic then by all means do, but if it does not then don't. There are additives in conventional oil that help your motor, that synthetics do not.

My car drinks PP like I used to drink vodka, even the 10W30. I don't know why, but it consumed more than twice as much as Castrol, Mobil 1, and any other oil I tried.

I found the same results with Pennzoil Platinum. My engine hated that stuff so much I think it was just spitting it out. I ran it for 1 oil change and that was it.

like what additives? i am pretty sure they both contain similar additives and slight advantage going to the synthetic team..
