Help! Problems with shifter

Hi. Someone broke into my car (2008 G35 Journey) and tried stealing it, only to be stopped by bystanders. I came back to find my car moved, but apparently ok. Drove it home that night. The next day, the electrical was working, but the engine wouldn't start unless I put the shifter in Neutral. However, the shifter doesn't seem to go into Park properly, even though the car is stopped and won't move. The engine will shut off but the dashboard shows the shifter isn't in park and the alarm is going off to say the car is not in park correctly. I finally disconnected the battery to stop the alarm. Perhaps when the thieves were trying to move it, they broke something in the shifter? Does it need to be replaced?
