water pump replacement

04 g35 sedan as i have been reading i believe my water pump is going out. ive noticed reguards to the timing chain/belt or something to do with timing. how does this corralate to the w pump? is it because of proximity? willl the timing stuff haft to be replaced also even if there are no timing issues? first i heard squelling from belt area, then radiator got a small crack on top, so i know radiator needs to be replaced. so should i replace radiator first and see if this solves issue? any and all advice will be greatly appreciated as i am not going to do the work i am a female and will be having having a shade tree mechanic doing this. or should i take it to a pro? this car is my daily driver and my funds are limited. what should i do or not do? please help!!!!!!!!!

Connie sorry you're having issues. How many miles are on your car? Water pump failure is fairly uncommon on the G and hard to replace as it sits behind the front timing cover. On higher mileage cars, over 100K miles, there are 4 main things that can fail in the cooling system: the radiator, radiator fans, thermostat and hoses. The repairs for these are fairly simple and can be easily performed by a competent mechanic or DIY'er. I always recommend replacing the hoses and thermostat when replacing a radiator. They are not expensive and age at about the same rate as the rad so it is just a good idea to do them when the cooling system is taken apart. The fan assembly is easy to test with a multimeter to see if the motors are getting the proper power and also easy to replace if they are bad. The belts are probably squeaking because they are getting coolant on them and if they haven't been replaced in a while now would be a good time to do them as well.

The decision of where to go is yours but I always suggest doing research and finding a reputable local shop to do the work. You don't want a scrub to improperly install something and risk hurting the car to save a buck. HTH

I had a water pump failure about 3 years ago and it doesn't sound like a belt squealing. It sounded like a damn banshee, lol. It's driven by the timing chain, so you wouldn't really hear squealing and the only they way they usually go bad is: (worn out bearings, impellers rusting off possibly, broken shaft somehow, bad gaskets allow it to "weep"). Luckily, you have an 04, so there are two window openings on the front of the motor. They are the two black covers if you look down at the front of the engine. The water pump is the one on the right and the timing chain tensioner is the one on the left.

You open both little access holes, give some slack to the chain, and then you jack out the water pump using two long bolts. You don't need to replace any of the other components if your chain doesn't have a lot of slack. Sometimes they fail and you'll get a startup noise, which sounds like a chain slapping that goes away once the oil pressure builds up. There are also plastic guide rails that break sometimes and if that's broken then you will need to take the whole front cover off, however, if your tensioner is tight and you don't have noise you should be good.

I think an average mechanic would probably charge 400-500 dollars to do this job. I would buy your parts from a Nissan dealership you want to go OEM for stuff like this. You'll also need two gaskets one for the coolant and one for the oil as far as taking it to a professional or shade tree mechanic. That is totally up to you, however, I will say this:

I'm a DIYer and I consider myself pretty decent when it comes to cars, but when I did this job. I ended up rotating the engine over somehow when trying to get enough slack to get the pump out. So, my simple job of changing a water turned into me having to take the whole front off, set the engine timing, and then while I was in there; I did replace all of my timing components. I called a Nissan dealership for an estimate how much to fix this and the labor alone was over 1000K dollars, so I spent a few weeks doing everything myself (I have another car) with downtime.

Luckily, everything went well with my car, but before you drop it off with the shadetree make sure they know what they're doing. Also, look up the FSM for your car about changing the pump, print it out, and then give it to him. The only problem I see if you go to a shadetree is unless you know them well they could just say "not my problem if something goes wrong" or if you take it a dealer or mechanic you could get sold some unnecessary parts/labor.

Does your car overheat at all or is just leaking coolant?
When you hear the belt squealing a simple test is to put some water on it to see if it goes away. It could just be a bad belt or you need a new pulley. One of the pulleys on the power steering, alternator, or a/c compressor could also be going bad.

If you're limited on funds you can try buying some Permatex RTV from the auto store, clean up the crack on the top, and then see if the RTV will seal it closed. 10 dollar fix might save you hundreds of dollars later on.

Sorry to hear of your problems but remember you are driving a fourteen year old vehicle.
As vehicles age they usually require more maintenance that includes parts and labor both of which can be expensive. If you go cheap with a "shade tree mechanic" that uses cheap parts you could end up paying twice.
So here is what I would do.
At least get a detailed estimate (parts and labor) from an Infiniti dealer. They most likely will charge to check it out but may deduct that charge if you have the work done by them?
They may include a loaner vehicle for you which most other shops do not.
If their price is high and over your budget you can always shop around and if you do get a cheaper quote make sure they use OEM parts and give you proof.
Years ago when I was complaining to my old boss about my 17 year old Mazda 929 with timing belt problems his response was "a new vehicle comes with all new parts and a warranty."

It was good advice and I no longer sink money into old vehicles.

Good luck

Sorry to hear about your car issues. If you need assistance with purchasing a new pump I would recommend you check out my dealerships eSTORE (Link below). With you being a G35 Driver user you qualify for an additional 15% off if you use the Promo Code G35Driver at checkout saving you a little extra $$ where you can. Thankfully water pumps for an 04 G35 aren't as pricey as some of the other models. I would always recommend using OEM parts if you can. Of course compare with other offers out there, but just wanted to help. Hope everything works out for you!

Did you check to see if the part numbers are different?
Are the model years the same?
Why not just purchase the exact OEM water pump for your vehicle?
If you are thinking of using a used part from a different vehicle you are probably just asking for trouble.

Just my $.02

Yes, you can use the pump. I strongly recommend you just get an OEM one though, it's only $100 and replacing them prematurely because the aftermarket one didn't last as long really sucks.
