The easiest way is to turn your wheel all the way to the right. (or remove the wheel if possible)
Remove the retaining pins in the water shield that outlines the wheel well, and pull it towards the driver. This will involve about 10 pins or screws.
Under the hood, disconnect the pipe from the rubber boot and disconnect it from where the pipe is attached to the engine block.
Pull the pipe up, while reaching in and unscrewing the filter from the pipe. NOTE you will not just be able to pull the pipe up through the engine bay.
Once unscrewed, remove the filter through the wheel well and then use the k and n filter cleaner available at your local auto store.

fairly often unfortunately because it is directly exposed to road grime. I suppose you could just rotate it until the entire thing is dirty, but I wouldnt want that crap in my engine. I saw an interesting product that k and n makes for their watercraft...a microhole screen that prevents water and big dirt particles from reaching the filter...you should check it out. Im going to get one for the rain.....

sportcoupe35: the basic kit comes with the filter cleaner and the oil you spray on afterward. you will need both and the box has complete instructions.

My Injen filter is blue. Wouldn't the red oil change the filter color? How long does cleaning take, because I need to drive my car everyday.
