Today I was trying to install my new engine for my 2004 G35 . Long story short the bolts that were holding my engine up had snapped while being 3ft in the air and the engine fell onto the ground and snapped off my oil filter o ring .. I need to know how and if its possible to fix this ... fml
If you broke off the threaded part on the engine block that the oil filter nipple threads into then that block is basically scrap metal.
Here's what the oil filter nipple looks like.
the oil filter nipple is still good . The metal that's still attached in the pictures I posted above is the threads from inside the block . What if I JB welded it or used some kid of weld ? Would it work ? Just got this engine and I was too eager to put the engine in and made a huge mistake .. would suck if I had to scrap it
You can definitely try to JB weld it back on, you're going to need a large tap with the same thread size/pitch as that nipple so you can clean the JB weld out of the threads after it's glued back on.
Just be sure to THOROUGHLY clean the surface of ANY oil or I guarantee it won't hold, brake cleaner to start with then isopropyl alcohol. Let it cure for a full 24 hours or longer, whatever the bottle says.
Torque for that oil filter nipple is 36 ft/lbs. Personally I would go about 30 ft/lbs because I doubt a JB welded piece is going to hold 36 but that stuff has worked miracles in the past... it's just got to clamp the o-ring tight enough to not leak oil is all.
