wow this is an old thread, but gonan bring it back:
so removing the engine cover completely would be a good idea for temp...not for looks.
and removing the hood insulation is a good idea as well. why is it bad for the hood though? will it melt the paint? it might keep people from touching or sitting on my delicate alum hood though and leaving prints or denting it.

I've been driving without my engine cover for over a month. The
water temp gauge needle now sits one tick lower than it did
before. This must be better.

Engine cover off the plenum is a bood thing as the cover does collect more heat under it. In terms of the hood foam padding, it simply reduces noise to the cabin and outside for a more luxury feel. It also looks better with it on than off. I wouldn't take that off if I didn't have to.
