Spending lots of $$$ to make it fast
I'm just curious - what is the rationale some of you have for spending 10, 15, 20, 30+k to go all forged and blown and whatnot in an attempt to make it fast?
I was initially going to go that route, but then sat down and thought about it and was like 'WTF...I'm going to spend that much money to make a slow car just a little bit faster'
So I decided to leave it as is and build a:

392stroker + 150shot of nawwwwwwwwwwz + 2000lbs race weight ; probably $40,000 spent when finished > * (inc. g35 w/ $50k in mods
)

For 2x that I'd rather run low 10s right out of the box (if you could ever get it to hook that is, lol! )
I like the G, I also like the Z06 but the G has a better interior and by the time I am done I will have 70K in a 500 plus whp car.

Ultimately, the question is answered in how much the owner appreciates the G35 overall and what do they think of a reasonably fast G35 compared to other options that would be available for the $55-60K it will inevitably cost.
That Shelby is one of the ultimate classics to be sure and if it's head turning one wants, it will be far more effective than the G35.

The gt500 is 4000 lbs, has a solid rear axle and puts out 420 at the wheels. Now, at 43K, it is still a hell of a deal. However, due to dealer markup, you can't touch one for less than 62K.
My car, when done will be superior in every way and only around 6 K more.
By the way, my exhaust has seasoned, and the car is really running well. I pulled on an M-3 the other night.

With that said, I truly admire and respect those whom have the passion and patience to build truly amazing personalized cars for themselves. You gotta love it!

I completely understand where your coming from. I've asked the same question myself. Some years back, I built this. I spent a total of $20k to build it, including the motor. Had it running mid 10s on drag radials. Never failed to turn heads. Raced it against a Viper, vettes, Mustangs, Porsches, etc, at the track and beat them all.
After I would spank them in the 1/4, we would talk and this would always be their expressions after I told them that my $20k car, which also got way more looks then their far costlier car.

It all depends on what you are doing it for.
Sure, those drop top cobras will run circles around my G, but I will have the nice climate control, the relatively quiet interior, the plush leather seats, etc...
My goal is to have a luxury (or somewhat luxury) car, with a very nice interior, room for 4 if I need it, nice electronic setup, reliable, good looking, and moderately fast car, both in a straight line, and around a corner.
The G does that for me. It looks good (although not the best in the world), it's moderately fast out of the box compared to many other cars, both in a straight line, and around the corner, I've installed a nice car entertainment system, it's reliable, and with a turbo kit from a good company (JWT), it can be even faster, and still be dependable as a daily driver. It's not the expert in any one area, but it's a damn good jack of all trades, which is what I want.
But thats just my tastes; yours obviously differ.

I agree with everyone on the performance aspect. But everyone is missing a key point; people dont buy this car just for performance. I bought my coupe because it is one of the nicest looking cars on the road (IMHO). It also has a very nice interior, there arent many running around where I am at, and the women love it. There are so many Vettes runnning around that they are like Mustangs now. I actually told a guy in Z06 the other day "Nice Mustang" (after he wouldnt stop trying to race me wiht his girl in the passenger side). He was like "this is a Z06 Corvette... blah blah blah". I replied back "Well I see so many of them around here it looks like Mustangs to me." His girl laughed and he sped off. My point is, the G35 coupe is a classy, sexy, sports car and it has the whole package. If I wanted performance only, I would have got an Evo and put a few bucks in it to have a really fast car. But then it would still be a cracker jack car and I would drool every time I saw a G pass by.

I guess Dr Jitsu said it best, we can! Now that being said, you are absolutely right that some of us spend immense amounts of money on our cars when we could go "out of the box" and get even better performance. I suspect that the same rational goes into the new body panels, updated custom lights, Etc. I personally like having a "one of a kind". I built it, I know whats in it and what it took to get to that point. It is one of my pride and joys, just like my kids.
