Even if that's not an issue for you, it is not possible because the tranny will go into limp mode after 1/2 a lap...and you will be stuck in 4th gear.
That's just how it is. As far as money, it's not 10000, it was $8000, and that included a clutch upgrade too (which was $1200 used, but usually goes for $3000 - ATS triple-disk carbon)... apples-to-apples

As for tracks, you could've upgraded upgraded your AT tranny and it would've been better on the tracks. Believe me, I track both cars and constant shifting sux (I've had AT and MT for couple of years).

Gurgen upgraded his auto tranny but my understanding is that his 5AT did not function as he would have liked it to.
There are some operational differences in the auto trannies between years and between sedan and coupe. In addition there are different firmware revisions for the different trannies. I have driven 5AT sedans only as loaners but I found some shift great and others were slugglish where gear selection was more of a top gear selector - I was like WTF?
I personally really like the operating characteristics of my particular 5AT from a 2004.5 G35 coupe. It shifts quickly and reliably. So I decided to do a full build and will be adding BMW SMG paddle shifters shortly. Then the plan is some HPDE events!
Coming from a manual, you don't have the same measure of control though because you cannot "pop the clutch" and slip it on demand. That is a limitation you have to get used to if you want the 5AT.
