Vortech Question
Hey fellos, I just got my Vortech Full kit installed over labor day weekend. The kit came with the Unichip and the guy that did my install wasn't an authorized Unichip dealer so he couldn't tune it. I plan on taking it in on Tuesday to this shop by my house who is a Unichip dealer to tune it.
My question is, Once I turn the car ON (untuned), and only if the car has not been ON for like a couple hours... MY engine makes a really loud, really annoying screeching noise!! Why would it do that??? And while it makes that noise, it seems like its going to stall.. But you let it sit and kinda calm down for a second...ITS FINE.. Idles at around 600..PURFECT.. I have no idea why it does this, everytime I start the car cold.
The install came out perfect and everything installed nicely. The only other thing I can think of is becuase my car is not tuned yet. Could that be the reason why it does this?? I will try to take a video of it and see if it does it again. Thanks for your help guys!

+3.... check your belt tension... If it is a tad loose it will sound like a cat getting raped under your hood for a fast 2-4 second count and then will calm down once it warms up a bit...
Check the play in your belt, you should only be able to turn it maybe 1/8 - 1/4 a way around between your fingers.
If you can turn it more than that then it is a tad to loose.

Yup, that is the raped cat sound
Your belt needs to be tightened a hair... It is not uncommon for the belt to need tightening after the first couple hundred miles or so cause it will stretch in the beginning a bit and is getting broken in.
If you get it done somewhere watch how they do it so you can do it later on yourself... learn as much as you can about your Vortech, it will save you hundreds down the line.

That I AM!! I've been reading about it for like 5 months before I ordered it. I am still learning.
Sorry but I'm still a super nub, where is this the bolt to tighten it?? I have an 05 Rev-up motor so the belt layout is totally different then the old layout.
Here is a picture of how the design looks:

Ok... I am NOT sure if the tensioner pulley is the same on your car or not... I have an 04...
You need to loosen the bolt in the middle of the pulley in the center of this pic 1st. This is the tensioner pulley...
Next you need to tighten this bolt (the one on the left) in incriments of 3-4 turns at a time and re-check the tightness of the belt. This bolt is located under the car near the alternater...
After it is tight to your satisfaction re-tighten the bolt on the pulley itself in pic one and you are good to go.
by the way, they are both 12mm bolts.
If you are unsure, take it to the place that did the install and have him show you 1st hand.
Good Luck!... P.S. you wont damage your engine with a slightly loose belt so it is not an immediate emergency... I would try to get to it in the next week if you cant get it in right away.
Good Luck! You will loove your Vorech! I love mine!

I'd like to hear an audio of it after about 10 minutes of running with a few revs too...if you can.

1 - how tight is the cog belt on the back of the blower? It should feel loose, not tight at all. Almost to the point where you feel it should be tighter. this belt will tighten as the pulley heat up and expands - too tight and you'll cause the bearing to overheat and and also introduce more sound - like a bag of loose rocks rolling around in the blower...that sound is the bearings being pulled from too much tension.
2 - If you take your index finger and push down on a long portion of the serpentine belt, how far can you push it? You only want to push one edge, to see if you can push it 1/4 of the way around, 1/2 way, etc. Proper tightening should be no more than a 1/4" (45 degrees), and not less than 1/8"...too tight and you'll have issues. You'll loose power and cause strain on the blower as well. Plan on adjusting tension after about a week, then again a few weeks later. Check it 1-2 times per month. Push the belt hard - not to the point where you have to use your shoulder to really force it down though.
3 - The rest sounds OK. Adjust / check the belt tensions, you should be OK and the sound should be different as well.
4 - what weight oil are you using? For maximum bearing protection, I would use Mobile 1 0W40 as well.
