How much for internals and what do I need? HELP!

Hi,

So I want to know I should upgrade internally to give myself a piece of mind when using my Vortech. I don't have plans to run the 9psi pulley, but would like the comfort of a N/A engine with the 8psi. Please list part names and manufacturers. Thanks guys.

2 G or not 2 G, there's no question!

Re: How much for internals and what do I need? HELP!

I should mention that I AM NOT looking to implement the stroker kit. Can't afford it. I want the cheapest solution to insure safety, and that's it.

Can the cylinder walls handle just the rods and pistons being upgraded and that's it, or, does it REQUIRE sleeves?

2 G or not 2 G, there's no question!

There are several threads on www.my350z.com regarding internals. You can probably expect to spend $1200 on the hardware and the same for install.

You should't worry about the pistons and rods so much. You should look at spending money on things like a clutch, better radiator hoses, low temp thermo, things that make your car cooler. If you're not going to get radical with your tuning then the stock internals should be fine. Another route you could look into is getting bigger injectors, new fuel pump w/return, and technosquare Vortech flash. This is much safer way to run than an untuned SS box.

Randy

Here is my detailed analysis of what you should do:

Pistons/Rods: ~$2000
Engine Assembly (long block), including cleaning of the heads, 5angle valve job, valve adjustments (pretty much everything): $2500
ARP High-Strength Head/Main Studs: ~$450 (not required unless you are going to boost over 10 psi IMO)
Labor of swapping the engine in/out: $1500

Do NOT do sleeves!

Total (realistic price w/o surprises): $6500

EDIT: forgot a few more things that you will need:

Injectors: $500-$800
Fuel pump and FMU (if yours is no sufficient for higher boost levels): $350
Tuning: $150

TOTAL: ~$7500

Sucks doesn't it

ouch...so upgrading the rods and pistons wouldn't be enough?

and i just sold my internals a few weeks ago. I knew you'd end up needing them.

Re: How much for internals and what do I need? HELP!

Well... Randy.. Look at the numbers.

If you just upgrade rods and pistons and rop your compression whilestaying at teh same boost level, you will LOSE tons of power. The point with doing the pistons is that you lower the compression (at the same time as strengthening the material, i.e. going forged) to allow for higher boost levels with a decreased chance of detonation.

If you in fact want to just get the pistons swapped in and not increase boost (or increase it very little just to make up for the power loss - say, to 11psi), then you won't need the bigger injectors.

This would be your price breakdown:
Pistons/Rods: ~$2000
Engine Assembly (long block), including cleaning of the heads, 5angle valve job, valve adjustments (pretty much everything): $2500
Labor of swapping the engine in/out: $1500 (or $2000)
Tuning: $150

TOTAL: $6150-$6650 + any applicable tax

You see, the difference is not that huge, and that's because the basic package costs more than people reaslize. Don't listen to people when they say "the rods are about a couple of grand"... Look at the real numbers, that's what I am trying to show you here. Also, keep in mind that when you take the engine off, you need to take off the supercharger as well (and later put it back in), which involves more work than putting the turbos back on (only slightly more time then the headers) once the engine is on the stand.. So your labor may be around $2000-2200 instead of $1500.

Re: How much for internals and what do I need? HEL

I would agree that pistons/rods are something that don't have to be done to run a stock blower, if that stock blower is tuned right. The only reason I opted to go with the internals is because I bought a 2nd engine to play with. I wasn't very comfortable removing a perectly good engine from my new car, completely tearing it apart, and then putting it back in.

I spent about $1600 on pistons and rods. I have yet to get prices on building the engine. I am expecting to spend another 4-5K to finish the car, and that is with the engine bought, and the rods and pistons bought already. I am planning on doing bigger injectors, another TS reflash (since they havn't gotten it right yet....), head work, and cams. I'm going with the stock crank. If I remember right the stock sleeves are expected to withstand 35psi of boost, and resleeved blocks will take up to 50psi.

Re: How much for internals and what do I need? HEL

nah, i wouldnt do anything to your internals if you plan on staying with the stock pulleys, im selling my foreged internals that i bought in the GB, im running the 9lb pulley and dont really feel the need to change mine out, ive got about 5K miles on y kit with not problems, the only thing im contemplating is going with bigger injectors, just get a good tune staying a little rich and take out a fair bit of timing, im not willing to spend 5000 more on my engine, if it blows ill build it if not ill be fine, i dont get into the boost very often also, if you do only one id change the rods, they have proven to be the weak link. but its a personal opinion, if you cant live without the feeling of security, do it. its a hard decision randy, i know ive been there, but i opted not to change anything at this time, i doubt this helps your decision.
