Thinking of going Stillen S/C

Hey everyone,

I have some disposable cash laying around and I was thinking of going for the Stillen Stage II mainly because, I want the warrety. I have a few questios before I do.

1. Has anyone blown their engine?
2. Anyone install a stage II on their own?
3. The kit says it comes fully tuned for our cars. Does that mean we don't have to bring our car to a tuner?
4. Anyone have any problems with this kit / warrenty what-so-ever?
5. Know any good install shops in the NYC/Northern NJ area. It says the kit can be put on in 12 hours?

I want extra power but I don't have to go nuts. Reliability is important to me to. I want to put it on and not have to worry that I have to mess with it or check everything all of the time.

I may evenn go stage I. Like I said, I don't need AWESOME power but an extra punch to bring me in the M3 / mid-level Porsche and high end Merzedes range would be nice.

And I want to spank civics! That's always a +! CIVIC SPANKING!

1. haven't heard anything like blown engine on stage 2 (only stage 2 with warranty)
2. Couple of members in this forum did self install
3. No need to go to tuner
4. no, no problem what so ever with stage2...(can't tell you much about warranty stuff)
5. I got mine installed by Infiniti dealer in SoCal...they only charged me 8 hrs @ $90/hr

Sure you'll be able to put some spanking on M3

To answer your questions the best that I know how.

1) I have not known anyone to or even heard of anyone blowing their engine.
2) If you do the install yourself, you won't have a warranty. You have to have a certified mechanic do the install. Expect $800-1000 for install.
3) The car has a split second box which has been locked down. Some tuners can break into (unlock it) but if Stillen finds out, the warranty for the stage II will be void.
4) The only problems that I have heard of is that the SC belts like to be chewed up if not put on correctly. And I have also heard that the belt has to be retightened every so often otherwise you will lose boost.
5) A great tuner in Chicago area is GRD. Don't know of any your way. But I do know of someone on here that has driven from Ohio to Illinois because of how good the tuner at GRD is.

Hope that helps...

Thanks that actually helps ALOT. I feel alot safer now. I have a friend that's a certified mechanic and he's worked at Infiniti so maybe he can help.

I'll just tell him "It'll be fun."

BTW what's a Split Second box and what would be the benefit of unlocking it?

SS box is the piggyback box that controls the Supercharger. if you are able to unlock it, then you can tune it beyond Stillen specs - and blow the engine, most likely.

Sukhi (member here), from whom I'm buying the supercharger, did the install himself in his car. said it took him the weekend.

Hrm.. I guess I can leave the split second box alone than. Also, I know nothing about installs. I've done a few things to my car but... still. I would rather have someone I trust at least be there.

I am not dumb I can read directions, I assume it comes with them haha.

The supercharger is a mechanical device. It spins with the crank, the faster the crank spins the faster the supercharger spins. A smaller pulley makes the supercharger spin faster creating more boost.

The SS box controls the 7th fuel injector, and alters timing. I don't think it does any monitoring of engine conditions.

Here are the instructions to install on a FX35. Should be close, but not exactly the same. http://www.infinitifx.org/phpBB2/vie...hlight=stillen

do you have a rev up? IMO a stillen s/c is not worth the money. You can get almost the same results ( a little less tq) with a UTEC and some bolts ons.

Look at this dyno on a 05 G35. 281.5whp and 253.1 tq with only a UTEC, and test pipes. You could still add an exhaust, UR or KNR pulley, a pop charger, plenum spacer, and possibly get another 10-15whp. This set up would be more realible than any FI system. Not only that it would cost about half the price of the Stillen and you could do most of the install yourself......UTEC is plug and play...test pipes easy, exhaust easy.....Pulley I would pay someone to do this. After that you just need to pay a tuner to custom tune your car....about $500.

And yes I know of one blown motor with a Stillen.

Stillen claims they had never heard of that before.........................
Have had temp problems since the installation. In hot weather the temp will go to the bottom of the "hot" gap.
Nissan blames Stillen and of course Stillen blames Nissan.

I guess that's minimal maintnence. It would take me 2 years to put 8K on my car. I don't even see the stage 4 on the Stillen website. Where do they get the upgrades for that?

IMHO I don't think the Stillen is worth it either, go the Bolt-on route and save some bucks. If you don't want to go with a Single or Twin Turbo or Centrifugal Supercharger (Vortech, ATI or HKS) thats understandable. If the Stillen kit was like $1500+ tax, then thats different. But for the price, its going to put you in the price range around a ST or Vortech, but above Bolt-ons. Power wise, if will drop you off a pretty good amount below a ST or Vortech and a little notch above Bolt-ons.
