Just bought an 05 FX35, only has 35K miles and micro filter had been changed. First thing I notuced is a musty smell. Dealer had the carpets sprayed with deoderizer as well as the A/C ducting. Maskes the musty smell but when deoderizer fades smell is still there. Any thoughts or similar experiences? Would active charcoal filter help?

Goto the local hardware store and get one of the odor eaters for the basement for musk...had on in the car in the trunk and left it there til it shriveled up and no more smell anymore

 

hmmm, that makes me a little suspicious about flood damage.

 

i use BG frigi fresh when i put a microfilter in any of my customer cars, and never had a complaint after using it till the next 15k+ miles when its time to do it agian =)

 

Sorry to cross-contaminate your FX forum with my G, but I saw this while browsing and wanted to help if possible.

If the smell is coming from the air vents, the odor is in the evaporator core.
It can be taken care of by using this.
Note that the deodorizer that the dealer is using is a temporary fix and will not remove the actual cause... it just masks it.
It's sorta like spraying perfume on a dirty dog.

The filters remove particles and although the charcoal filter helps with smells a little bit, it's not going to help with the moldy smell. In fact, that mildew, if left untreated, will nasty up your new cabin filters twice as fast.

I have gotten into the habit of shutting off the A/C about 5 minutes before I get to my destination, but I leave the fan running. That moisture, over time, causes mildew and that nasty smell to occur.
This stuff takes care of it very quickly and easily.
(Assuming this smell comes from the vents) Good luck.

 

thanks for the info, I'm going to order some. I also changed out the cabin filter to a charcoal one and notice the dealer replace the orig one with another paper and had it in sideways so air would just circulate around the sides. Is this product a spray? Again thanks for the site as I believe this is what my smell is, no water damage, clean carfax and no signs of water anywhere in the car. The charcoal filter installed correctly has made a hugh improvement so this product should finish the process.

 

It's a spray that turns into a foam and then dries itself out... killing the mildew as it does so.

I personally haven't used it yet, but I know plenty of people in the forums that have, all with good results.
I may need it someday, but with the habits mentioned above, I've avoided the mildew issue up to now.

 

where is the evaporator core at???
also whats the best way to avoid this? turn off AC at your destination?
mine kinda smells a bit but goes away after a few seconds. Might aswell fix it before it goes bad

 

Turn off your AC a few minutes before you turn off your car. And/or, run your AC with the heat on occasionally.

Funny, this happened with my first G and my FX. When buying my third Infiniti I brought this up to the Sales Guy and he acted like I was crazy. "I've never heard of that happening". Riiiggghhhtt

I don't know for sure, but I know that thery're usually pretty close to the micro-filter. The can comes with a long flexible tube so you can fish it further inside the venting system.

 

I believe the core is behind the dash above and to the right of the glove box.

 

is it easily accessible? like when i change my filter can i see it?
