Clutch made a terrible noise today

I have a fairly steep driveway. Today as i was going up the drivewey feathering the clutch it made a terrible noise. I was doing everything normally but as I feathered it and started to move it made like this low pitched screaming type noise, and afterward the smell of burnt clutch was VERY strong. I have never heard that noise before on any vehicle. Also, when I parked it and came back 15 minutes later to check on it, i noticed a loud rattling noise as the car sat in neutral, and this noise would go away when I pressed in the clutch. I checked it just now and the smell is gone as well as the rattling, but I am still worried. I know I did not do anything wrong or abusive.

I was complaining about it feeling strange before, and now this happened. Should I have this checked out? Does it sound like the clutch may be defective?

throw-out bearing ...woot ftw
more than likely, along with normal tranny noise(always sounds like a cement mixer) it could be the throw out bearing taking a dump
