Our cars oly have a 15 gallon tank. rant.

Sure Sure I know it holds 20 gallons, but when the light comes on 3/4 of the way through you know you better get it filled up because the next person that gets in there with you is going to point out the fact that you need gas. It's also annoying to drive with that big yellow light on and so I get mine filled up when I get to the quarter tank mark whether the light is on or not.

Is there a way to fix this so that the light comes on when there's about 2 gallons left? I actually ran out of gas once because I was on the expressway driving from Atlanta, GA to Charleston, SC and forgot how long the light had been on and what my mileage was when it did come on. I knew I had about 4-5 gallons when the light came on, which roughly translates to 80-100 miles. I was so hung-over that before i knew it my engine stopped, clutch started burning, and i was on the side of the road screaming to infiniti roadside assistance about how inaccurate the gage was.

anyone else hate this thing about our cars?

The gauge isn't accurate all the time. Mines has gone on from 15 gallons all the way to 17. You should already know by now how many miles you get with each tank. When my mileage reaches 300, I know it's at about 16.5 gal.

your gas gauge is doing its job, it doesnt change to acommodate lazy drivers who try as long as possible to not fill up. does waiting till you're really out of gas make any difference than if you fill it up when the light first comes on. this stupid thread should be deleted...

If you have the OEM navigation, you can get your MPG and your miles till empty reading.

i'm not lazy.
i mean, what the point of a gas guage if there's a light there to tell you when you have roughly 80-100 miles left before you run out?

I guess in a society where christmas decorations come out 3 months ahead of time to remind you of the upcoming day, this just seems normal.

Like someone said, this thread is like a butter knife...it's pointless. What on earth are you ranting about? The fact that we have a guage AND a light to remind us when to fill our cars? The gas gauge is there for people that actually care when they fill their tanks up before it gets to 1/4 left and have the light come on. Imagine driving to Vegas from LA and not having a gauge: when the yellow light comes on and reminds you that you have 100 miles left but you are 130 from the next gas stop, I guess you will be at least happy to know the yellow light wasn't on to annoy you and your passengers while you pushed your car for 30 miles

the first volkswagon bugs did not have a gas guage! You drove till it ran out and it had a small one gallon reserve tank (40 mpg) that you switched to, to get you to the gas station. I am not old enough to use this first hand

IF YOU WANT AN ACCURATE GAS LIGHT, GET A TOYOTA...THEY HAVE ALMOST EXACTLY 45 MPG LEFT UNTIL EMPTY WHEN THE LIGHT COMES ON.

The point at which the light comes on is different btw the 2003-04 and the 05. On my 03 coupe the light would come on with like 1-2 gallons remaining. Same goes for my 04 G35X. However, on my 05' coupe the light comes on at like a quarter tank which could cause confusion..I guess the easiest thing to do is not get to that point which I can never seem to do.
