Spark Plug Tube Seals Leaking

Hey there.

Has anyone encountered this yet on their G's?

My wife's sedan with 90K+ miles has this occurring in two cylinders and my coupe with with 60K+ miles has it in one cylinder.

Apparently, for the fix, you need to buy an entire new valve cover ($400+).

The joy of the VQ...

I dont see why you would need to get a whole new valve cover. You shoul dbe able to just get a valve cover gasket kit that includes the seals around the spark plugs. Whoever told you that you need the entire cover is just trying to get one over on you.

Trust me I have experience this same problem with Nissan Maximas and V6 Mazdas.

I spoke to Nissan & Infiniti, and they both told me that the spark plug tube seals aren't sold separately on the G35's & the 350Z's: you have to purchase the entire valve cover. This didn't make sense to me, so I had a diagram sent to me and sure enough they don't sell the spark plug tube seals separately.

go to pepboys or autozone and see if they sell the valve cover gasket kit. should only be like 20 - 60 bucks. I've done it on a few cars.

I had a different problem requiring a new valve cover. I found one from another member on here for $100. Keep your eye out.

Jdmeg,

Have you done this on a G35, a 350Z, or some other car?? That would be a'ight if there is a fix for the VQ's!

Also, if I hypothetically didn't replace these on our cars, what would the potential long-term ramifications be? We're likely going to hang onto them for a couple of more years.

Thanks,

Clint

What are the odds of finding two on here?

just on other cars. replace it, otherwise oil is going to keep getting in there and eventually weaken the spark of that specific plug, causing other problems.

Enlighten me here - what is a spark plug tube seal? The spark plug itself has a washer that is the seal, but what is this spark plug tube seal that you're talking about?

That seal is an o-ring type rubber seal that is located within the valve cover around the opening for each spark plag. It prevents oil from engine leaking down on the spark plugs eventually fouling them. Usally they are including in a valve cover gasket kit that you can buy from Pep Boys or Discount auto. If this is not repaired it will rob you of power causing the cylinders to misfire.

I would go to pep boys and examine the valve cover gasket kit to see if it includes the seals.

I wouldn't recommend it, UNLESS you have a gasket that won't sit on the valve cover and falls off when trying to install gasket, just use a couple drops separated over the gasket to keep it on the valve cover.

and the other time you would use it, is on things that gaskets are not made for. like thermostat on some cars. and a couple other things I haven't gotten to.

I said the same thing, I was told the seals only come on new covers. I did not like that answer, I will be researching a fix for this, I did not read all the posts on this, so hope I am not speaking on an already fixed issue, too little time and too much stuff 2 do.
