Looking at 3,900 mile '04 G35....what price is fair?

Hello! I am new to the group, and my wife and I are looking at a 2004 G35 Coupe that only has about 3,900 miles. The vehicle has a Procharger supercharger as the only modification to it, otherwise the entire car is stock. The only thing I do not like about the car is that it is an automatic, and we only have manual transmission cars right now, but I realize that finding a 2004 G35 that is essentially new in terms of mileage is rare. The vehicle is Pearl White with what looks to be a dark gray interior, wing, and the larger wheel option, but no Brembo brakes. The seller is asking about $26k for the car. The car is not local and will be about a day trip to see, so before wasting time I would like to get an informed opinion from people on here about what would be a fair price to offer the guy.

I already looked up the NADA and Kelley Blue Book values, and they are about in line with what he is asking, but previous experience suggests that those values are also inflated compared to what the real selling market is. Your help is greatly appreciated, as I have very little knowledge of the G35 and its value or things I should look for.

Not too sure

This almost seems to fall in to the "If its too good to be true" situations. I would be EXTREEMLY weery of this car. One, as you said, its rare. Almost too rare. So, being that its had a procharger installed, it beggs the question... has the motor been rebuilt or replaced? If so, keep walking. Also, you mention that you really didnt want an auto. I dont think a procharger is worth not having a 6mt. At least not to me. I honestly dont think the milage is so important. I have 110K + on my 03 6mt G. So wouldnt worry about that on a stock G. Good luck with your search.

Thank you for the reply. Assuming all checks out, what would you offer the owner though? The only reason I am even considering an automatic is that my wife and I do a lot of commuting through relatively annoying traffic, as well as long cruises to visit family several hours away. She would probably drive it most of the time anyway. I have looked into several different cars and she gets freaked out on buying a car with very many miles because you do not know what the previous owner did to it, hence the search for a low mileage vehicle.

3,900 mis on an '04? Either a little old lady drove it only on Sunday or a lot of those miles were put on at the drag strip (given the mods.) Maybe there is a another explanation, but I would ask the owner to explain the low miles.

I would certainly get it thoroughly checked by a mechanic and make sure it hasn't been in a bad accident. Maybe ~$20-22k, more if it checks out. I dunno, strange situation with the low mileage. In general, I would consider engine mods as lowering value.

Could be a good find, but be careful.

So if it checks out, is $24k or $25k overpaying for it?

LOL! Everyone is dead set that this car has had a rebuilt motor or something just because of the mileage. Some people just have extra cars they do not drive a lot. I know that I have a car that I have only driven about 1,200 miles in 4 years. Not every car with low mileage has stories.

On the plus side, what I have gathered is that this must be a really good deal if it checks out since everyone is assuming this car must have a ton of stories to be really low mileage and only $26k. I think that may be the answer to my question. If I am incorrect, please let me know. Thanks gang!

I think you may be on right track with the low mileage theory. We have 4 cars, 3 of which I commute to work and rotate with. I have on '05, 2.5 years and I only have 9,100 miles. Not everybody is out to scam you.

Okay, good...now I know that I am not going crazy or something. From what I can gather, the car seems to be legit, with no stories. I asked the seller if he would mind me having the car checked out in detail and he said it was fine, the car has nothing to hide. I really do wish it was a 6 speed...but I guess we cannot always have it all.

What was his explanation of the low mileage? Check his maintenance records. Has the oil been changed? If it's a true 3,900 miles, then I'd say you scored. That's literally brand new. Too bad it wasn't all stock though.

6MT Coupe
Obviously it wasn't a daily driver. I have a beater I use for that and only use my G for meets/runs/and when I feel frisky.

Also (which no one has mentioned) an 04 IP with graphite interior is RARE!!
Do a search and see how many of those with that ext/int combos you find

since the OP mentioned a "day trip" to see car, it's pretty clear that the odometer hasn't been seen... From the read it seems an ad was read... if this is the case, 3900 is probably a typo and missing a zero.

Ivory Pearl/Graphite is not a common color combination.... I think it was only available for the 03-04 model years. And if it has only 3,900/39,000....miles it still sounds like a good car. If it does have 39,000 miles, I guess around $23,000 - $26,000 sounds fair if its well maintained.

If your leary about the mileage, have a dealership check out the car. Maybe they can pull up any service records etc.

Good luck with your endeavor, and Welcome to the boards.

He sent me a picture of the odometer, and it said something like 3,985 miles. No typo. Just low mileage. Seeing the car today.

Yeah, I had never seen the color combination before. I am eager to see how the car looks....hopefully I can convince myself to accept an automatic. Thank you for the welcome.

How do I post pictures? I will let you guys see the photographs for yourself. Maybe that would help.
