Usually the warranty only covers rust that goes through the body, not surface rust.

Ouch, I looked at a G35 to buy that actually had rust in the same spot, which tells me obviously that the previous owner was a little careless once while they were putting gas in...sucks.

Infiniti will not cover it, it has to be a defect (I called awhile back), which clearly the above isn't.

You'll have to take it to a body shop, they have to sand/treat/do their thing on the entire panel, to avoid letting the rust spread (this is what Infiniti quickly told me).

how big is the area with rust?

i also had rust on my car and got rid of it using a rust removing pen (pen with fiberglass strands in it) and then touching it up with primer and paint. my area was very small. basically a little larger than a rock chip. i had 2 areas that i had to repair. it was a lot easier than i thought. the surface rust was very easy to remove with the pen.

i also bought some rust converter at the time but found i didn't need it because the pen completed the job all by itself.

That's what happens when exposed metal, and moisture meet. No need to be surprised.

Sorry, not a warranty issue. Hopefully it's inexpensive to fix.

i would seriously suggest just getting a fiberglass pencil:

with some touch-up paint and/or primer ... you can fix it easily.

unless it's really bothering you.. then just take it into a body shop.
