They're used for maximum exhaust flow and power gain. Most test pipes are simply straight pipes and increase exhaust noise significantly, some, however, are fully resonated to reduce sound levels. From a practical standpoint, they're about as useful as 5 inch high-heels (unless you live on the track).

And unless you're boosted. If you're boosted, they're about as useful as a pair of basketball shoes for someone who, well plays basketball.

If you N/a then high flow cats is what you want... some gain without the paint in the *** or a cell, and it may be a bit stinky

If Boosted test pipes are good for high boost aps and help getting the exhaust out faster...

This is why some responsible folks who use the test pipes and boosters drive them on the track. Technically, you're not supposed to remove the catalytic converter, but most folks do with their test pipes. A minority of people interchange them-- install them when on the track and remove them when on the road since they're essentially a bolt on part. Joedaddy1 is right though, test pipes do leave a huge carbon footprint; however, if you read the posts of >90% of those on this forum, this is of minimal concern--- it's all about the bling factor!!!
